Overview

Delsie knew it wasn't a good idea to dare her best friend Todd to explore the abandoned houses by the old mill. But she couldn't back down after the words slipped out of her mouth. Together the two friends bike to the mill and try the door of each abandoned house. They are all locked . . . except one. Delsie and Todd sneak inside and discover two strange things. Someone is living there. And something doesn't want Delsie to leave. It's a dog, a strange golden dog, that only Delsie can see!

Newbery Honor-winning author Marion Dane Bauer spins a fourth spooky tale to complement her previous stories, The Blue Ghost, The Red Ghost, and The Green Ghost.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lois Rubin Gross
This is a magical book written by an author who knows how to imbue a slim book with great heart. Delsie wants a dog more than anything in the world, but her dad is allergic so she will not have one. Her friend Todd, a boy and a friend in that sliver of childhood when the words can reside in the same space and not be romantically connected, has a small spaniel mix named Bug, but it isn't the same as having a dog of her own. Delsie and Todd live in an old town so small that it barely has one of everything and, with the mill closed, it has a street of derelict houses that Todd and Delsie set out to explore. And here is where the magic occurs! Delsie and Todd break into a house and find that it is occupied by an old, bitter, and mean homeless man who wants nothing to do with troublesome children, but his ghostly golden retriever is visible to Delsie and to Bug. Delsie sees the dog as a series of sparkles and follows him when his crotchety master is hurt, saving the man's life. Then in a miracle of the heart, Delsie gets to keep the ghostly and apparently hypoallergenic dog in the place in her bed and her heart that has been reserved for a pet. This is a wonderful early chapter book, poetic and full of the longing of a pre-adolescent girl for a companion animal. Many children will relate to Delsie's desire. It is also the story of how a man's luck ran out and his life was made better by a beautiful dog. Give this book to every animal lover you know and listen for their satisfied sigh as they finish the last chapter. Reviewer: Lois Rubin Gross

Gr 2–3—Bauer takes readers on an exciting fantasy mystery. Friends Delsie and Todd are bored over Labor Day weekend until they sneak inside an empty house and discover that something strange is going on. As the plot unravels, Delsie, who has always wanted a dog, feels and eventually sees a canine ghost. From that point on, readers will be kept on the edge of their seats. Ferguson's charcoal illustrations bring an old-fashioned charm to this easy chapter book.—Nancy Mackenzie, Ithan Elementary School Library, Bryn Mawr, PA
