Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debby Willett
Little Turtle is only nine winters old when he chooses Golden Sun, an Appaloosa pony, for himself. Golden Sun, a quick learner, wants Little Turtle to be proud of him. Golden Sun listens closely when Little Turtle trains him so he will be proud of his pony. The spotted horses of Little Turtle's tribe, the Nimi'ipuu, call the horses, such as Golden Sun, Maamin. Little Turtle is waiting patiently until Golden Sun is old enough, and big enough for him to ride. In the meantime, there is much for both of them to learn. One day a young filly swims across the river that separates two tribes. The filly is stomping her back feet and snorting, making a lot of noise. Golden Sun speaks to her, trying to calm her. A friend of Little Turtle, Pale Moon decides she likes the new filly and wants to keep her. Golden Sun speaks to the new filly about the tribe's ways, but the filly is afraid; she has not been treated well. Pale Moon is kind to the filly, calls her Dancing Feather and gives her good food. The two colts learn together and grow as their tribal counterparts. It is not long before they are bigger and racing side by side. Soon, Golden Sun accompanies Little Turtle to a very special time in his life; most horses are not allowed to go. This is a very enjoyable read for young readers, especially those who like horses. The point of view is strictly from Golden Sun, and he manages to educate the reader while engaging them. The black and white illustrations are finely detailed allowing for an open window into the tribe's life. At the end of the book, Sanderson included an appendix giving more information about the Appaloosa horses, which is very helpful and informational to the story. A great book to add to any library. "Horse Diaries" series. Reviewer: Debby Willett

Meet the Author

Whitney Sanderson is the daughter of Horse Diaries illustrator Ruth Sanderson. Her family has owned horses since she was a child, and her bookshelves were always filled with horse stories. When she isn’t writing, she volunteers at a horse rescue and therapeutic riding center. She has an Appaloosa named Thor, who posed as the model for Golden Sun.

Ruth Sanderson grew up with a love for horses. She drew them constantly, and her first oil painting, at age fourteen, was a horse portrait.

Ruth has illustrated and retold many fairy tales and likes to feature horses in them whenever possible. Her book about a magical horse, The Golden Mare, the Firebird, and the Magic Ring, won the Texas Bluebonnet Award in 2003. She illustrated the first Black Stallion paperback covers and a number of chapter books about horses, most recently Summer Pony and Winter Pony by Jean Slaughter Doty.

To find out more about her adventures with horses and the research she did to create the illustrations in this book, visit her Web site, www.ruthsanderson.com.

    Blackfeather

(No time for rp, but I figure she can still stalk you lol) Blackfeather watched the couple with a distressed piar of blue eyes. She hadn't been around, but she knew from others stories how happy the two had once been. Blackfeather still was drawn to Goldenstripe, despite the fact he'd killed her, but she wanted him to be happy. Softly the black shecat took herself to the golden toms dreams, where she sat before him and smiled. "Goldenstripe, you need not be afraid anymore. I will promise you that Shadowstar will be kept far away from you and those you love, if you return home and have confidence in yourself. You are a good cat, no matter what Shadowstar has done, and your strong enough to fight against whatever darkness he might have tried to implant in you. Lilywolf doesn't want a life without you. After all you've done, she still loves you, and leaving isn't the way to repay her." With a slight dip of her head, she vanished. Blackfeather next traveled to Lilywolf, an encouraging smile her greeting. "The sun must always return to warm the delicate lilies, for it was created to do so. It will rise and shine brighter than any time before, replacing the night sky of velvet stars with hesitant golden light. The last few stars will fall, and then the skies will change." Dipping her head, Blackfeather returned home, hoping she'd helped as much as she could. ~Blackfeather

    Goldenstripe

As Goldenstripe slept, Shadowstar's laugh and terrifying blue eyes seemed to completely consume him, surrounding him with no way to escape. "I have her..." his voice growled over and over again. Goldenstripe eventually woke up, his fur bristled nervously. Glancing below, he saw Lilywolf's place left empty and imediately paniced. Thinking Shadowstar had somehow got ahold of Lilywolf again, the golden tom dove out of the tree and looked frantically around. His mind was too paniced to catch her scent, and he couldn't sort his thoughts out no matter what he did. Without thinking, Goldenstripe turned and bounded off towards Horseclan. He didn't know how welcomed he'd be, but if Shadowstar did have Lilywolf he'd need help to save her. ~Goldenstripe

    Lilywolf

The light gray tabby shecat wakes with a start. A fresh wound on her flank throbs painfully. Lilywolf looks up and sighs as she spots Goldenstripe still in his tree. "He doesn't ever want to go back." She thinks, her eyes starting to well up with tears. "I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. But it has and now I don't have any choice." Rising up silently, careful not to alert Goldenstripe, Lilywolf slips away. Picking up her pace to a trot, she heads back the direction she came, back to Horseclan. Along the way she finds Doepaw and Rosepetal. Tail dragging in the dirt, the tabby prepares herself for what she must do. ~ Lilywolf &hearts
