    Golden Debut

Melissa Sweeney, backed by appealing orchestrations, generates an exceptional first album. GOLDEN THREAD includes many standards as well as the titular original composition, which boasts one of the best song titles in recent memory. Sweeney's vocal stylings impress. Within the pitch of a single note, she moves from driving chanteuse to mischevious flirt to a lonely echo. She even finds a gospel feel for the beautifully written Golden Thread, co-written by album producer Bill Cunliffe. "All we love is hanging by a golden thread...," sings Sweeney and we're not sure if she is lamenting or celebrating that uncomfortable truth, which of course seals the success of the song. Let's hope for our benefit that Melissa keeps sewing that thread into fabrics as rich and textured as this album.
