Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sarah Nelson DeWald
Mrs. Peterson promises Charles and Lizzie that someday they'll have a new puppy, "when the time is right." But when Charles and Lizzie's dad brings Goldie home, they are sure he is the perfect pet for their family. Mrs. Peterson is not convinced. Lizzie and Charles work hard to show their mom that they are ready to have the responsibility of owning their very own puppy. Goldie is adorable, cute, occasionally mischievous, and sometimes messy, as all puppies are expected to be. Lizzie and Charles make valiant attempts to train Goldie, while their dad leads the charge in finding a new home for Goldie. At last they find a compromise that keeps Goldie close to Charles and Lizzie, while still keeping Goldie out of the Peterson household. This beginning chapter book will delight all young animal lovers. Goldie is irresistible and lovable, and the reader will find himself rooting for the Peterson children and their schemes to keep Goldie in their home. Miles even includes Goldie's thoughts and feelings in italicized print throughout the story. An endearing story of responsibility, loyalty and friendship especially tailored for young readers from the "Puppy Place" series.
Children's Literature - Valerie O. Patterson
Charlie and his sister Lizzie have wanted a puppy of their own for forever, it seems. When they have a chance to foster a Golden Retriever puppy, Goldie, the children set about proving to their skeptical mother that they are truly ready for a dog of their own. A satisfying compromise at the book's end ensures Goldie stays close by. Based on how well things worked out with Goldie, the family decides to foster another puppy that the children may get to keep. The realities of dog care—from housebreaking to socialization—are woven into the ten short chapters of this useful tale for every child who wants a dog, and every parent that the thinks the time is not right. This title is the first book in a new series called "The Puppy Place," a place "where every puppy finds a home." The author includes puppy care tips at the end.

My 6 year old daughter read this book to me and we both loved it! We will definitely be purchasing the rest of the books in the Puppy Place series. It is nice to come across a good series that keeps the language age appropriate! My daughter is hoping that Ellen Miles will write a book with a Pomeranian- that is what kind of puppy she adopted!

I really like that when Goldie came home she did'nt set a good example as soon as Mrs. Peterson got home! But she did do a pretty good job getting trained by Lizzy and Charles in only a couple weeks!

I liked this story because I love dogs and plus I have a Golden Retriever just like Goldie. What I don't like was that the family had bad news about Goldie. I would recommend this to people who like dogs and care for them. Also, it is about a puppy that was in a fire and Lizzie and Charles didn't know about it because their dad is a firefighter. Also before that their mom said they could not get a puppy but their dad got one without talking to their mom. But maybe they could foster it or even maybe keep it. This book is filled with laughter, cuteness, and some sadness. Review By: Grace Cunningham
