Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
There have been countless retellings of this classic but this new entry into the crowded field may well become a favorite. The narrative is pleasingly faithful to the basic plot elements, and Stevens's humorous watercolor paintings are a bit more colorful than her usual work. The bears have clearly defined personalities and funny (yet still bearlike) facial expressions and mannerisms. Their house is comfortable and pleasantly messy. Goldilocks's cute chubby cheeks and blond mop of hair are a bit reminiscent of the heroine of Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Baby bear is particularly childlike with his blue overalls, white sneakers and preschoolerish facial expressions. The pivotal scene when Goldilocks faces the bears is a wonderfully detailed tableau. Great fun. (2-6)
School Library Journal
PreS-K Full- and partial-page watercolors illustrate this version of the old favorite. The Bear family is a trio of cozy, friendly looking beasts. Goldilocks is an average looking child with sagging knee socks. The Bears and their house have some interesting detailsbraided rug; flowery print dress and double strand of pearls for Mama; assorted plaids and hiking boots for Papa; sneakers and overalls for Baby. The retelling is spare, appropriate for the very youngest, but not particularily colorful. Likewise, the illustrations' coloration is muted. They sometimes have a rather unsettling perspective, which will be confusing to preschoolers' untrained eyes. Stevens' illustrations for The Owl and the Pussycat (1983) and The Princess and the Pea (1982, both Holiday) are much more whimsical and appropriate for this age. For richer telling and brighter, more expansive illustrations of ``Goldilocks,'' Lorinda Bryan Cauley's (Putnam, 1981) is excellent, and Paul Galdone's familiar style (Clarion, 1972) adds a different kind of humor to the tale.
