Overview

Welsh/Nigerian belter Shirley Bassey's 1995 collection Goldsinger: The Best of Shirley Bassey is a near-perfect way for the novice American listener to be introduced to one of the international music community's most famous vocalists. Amazingly, she only scored one major hit in the United States, ("Goldfinger"), for which she is best remembered. Her overseas catalog of hits, however, is huge. This collection does a fine job assembling the best of her overseas hits, some of the biggest being "As Long as He Needs Me" from Oliver!, "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" from Broadway's The Sound of Music, and "Reach for the Stars." That last song, as Joseph Laredo's excellent liner notes point out, peaked at number 120 on American charts, to give an idea of the disparity between her stateside and European careers. This collection includes some fine rarities (and gems in their own right) previously unavailable in the United States. Among those are "Ave Maria," her version of West Side Story's "Tonight," and her stirring early recording "With These Hands." To round the collection out, as expected, are the James Bond themes "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Moonraker," as well as two versions of the title track. For the uninitiated as well as the fan, this collection provides a fine summary of some of this legendary vocalist's best work. Kudos to the production team who made this album happen.
