Overview

When Golf Digest selected three of Tom Fazio's spectacular designs—Old Overton in Alabama (private), World Woods in Florida (resort), and Karsten Creek in Oklahoma (public)—as the Best New Golf Courses of 1994, the first time a single architect had swept all three categories—it confirmed what the golf world had long acknowledged: Fazio ranks among America's premier golf architects.

This stunning book takes us into the inner workings of this master golf designer's mind—in Fazio's own words and in lush, inviting photographs that show his genius for linking nature and golf to create holes that are strategically challenging, aesthetically pleasing, and fun to play. Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida; Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nevada; Pinehurst #8 in Pinehurst, North Carolina; Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia, Mississippi; and Pelican Hill in Newport, California, are just a handful of the 50 courses shown here in over 170 dramatic photographs, must commissioned from John and Jeannine Henebry, a brother-sister team who are among the very top golf-course photographers.

    Solid, but a touch confusing

Reading Fazio's book is like taking a Golf Course Design 101 class. He touches on all of the basic elements of crafting a course and injects a healthy dose of his own preferences and idiosyncracies. Half of the book is text, the other half is pictures from a wide array of courses. Unfortunately, the pictures never correspond with the text. For instance, Fazio will be discussing one of his designs at Pinehurst, but the two accompanying pictures are both of his work in Sea Island, Ga. This is a huge oversight and becomes more glaring as you get into the book and desire to see visual examples of what the text is discussing. A good read overall, though, and the pictures make you want to grab your sticks and leave the couch behind.
