Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
There is a lot to recommend about Barr's compendium of public golf courses: the photography is excellent; the narrative is interesting; the snapshots of course particulars are very good. Barr, however, does a much better job on "awesome" than he does with "secrets" and "affordable." How many golfers have not heard of Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, or Bethpage Black? But, except for Bethpage Black, none of these is really affordable unless a person earns six figures or above. In short, a public golf course is not a free golf course; it's one that is open to the paying public rather than to members only. Barr does note multiple courses, in addition to the ones he profiles, that may fit within his criteria. In contrast, Steve Rushin offers a 5400-word essay on public golf in the August 2009 issue of Golf Digest (www.golfdigest.com). Rushin's course selection may not be accompanied by such dramatic photography or particulars, but it's certainly more in line with affordability (though Bethpage and Torrey Pines are on his list as well). While Barr here certainly covers much more ground, Rushin's piece tends to play better for the everyman and everywoman. VERDICT Readers looking for affordable public courses can pass on this selection. Others may enjoy it.—Steven Silkunas, North Wales, PA
