Editorial Reviews

New York Times - Paul Griffiths
This is music that springs straight from Latin American culture in its lively pulses, hot and earthy choral chants, sensuous vocal nocturnes, [and] bright fanfares.
The New Yorker
Osvaldo Golijov's setting of the St. Mark Passion [is] one of the most acclaimed and controversial works of the new century. Golijov...freely mixes the sounds of Latin street music with classical influences to create a grand tableau that is worthy of the tradition of J. S. Bach.
International Record Review - Ivan Moody
Golijov has, in my estimation, succeeded brilliantly in the very difficult task of seeing the Passion anew musically.... [T]he story unfolds in constantly revolving kaleidoscopic fragments, and a striking thing is the way sentimentality is interwoven in this fresco-like way with hyperactive rhythmic writing. There are moments of genuine beauty too.

This piece of music was part of the ''Bach 2000'' project in which various composers attempted a reinvention of Bach's Passion. I was astounded by this composition. The recording is of a live performance which includes a brilliant Venezuelan Choral group and beautiful vocal solos on nearly every track. Do not miss this!

I just purchased this piece online, so I can't review the record itself. If it is only half as good as the performance I heard live, it will still be very worth the money. Golijov intertwined traditional Afro-Hispanic music, Classical, and Avante Garde to present this story in symphonic/ choral form. Very beautiful and moving, Definitely worth it!
