Overview

Rena never meant to steal her ex-boyfriend's dog. She was just casually driving by his new house, taking stock of his new life, when the dog invited himself into her car...Okay, so she stole the dog. Unfortunately, being a dog-napper is the least of Rena's problems. Her mother’s dating a “potential” serial killer, her sister’s having an identity crisis and she’s the target of one hopeless fix-up after another—most recently, the highly moral Chuck, who just happens to know all about Rena's dog-napping escapades. If Rena wants to straighten things out, she'll have to face up to the choices she's made, the dreams she's put on hold, and the man who broke her heart.

If the break-up with Brian wasn't bad enough, Rena's mother is getting serious with a new guy Rena is unsure about, her sister's seemingly happy Orthodox Jewish marriage is in trouble, and her family is on a mission to fix her up with a new man. The someone they settle on is affable Chuck, who encourages her to return the dog, settle her issues with Brian, and find a job that really makes her happy. But when Rena makes a big mistake, she wonders if she's screwed up her chances to move on with her life for good. Guterson (We Are All Fine Here) is familiar with the chick lit formula, so the neurotic and insecure Rena immediately garners her sympathy. While Rena's family functions as a surprisingly rich comic buffer, fans won't find many memorable moments in this breezy read.

    Horrible

    I only read to page 34 and it swore 6 times. Since im only 10 it was horrible and i showed my pa i wasnt allowed to finish.

    Easy Read

    I enjoyed this book, a quick and easy read. Very light and fun, I didn't want to put it down. Good characters, very nice writing style, but some parts of the story were a little predictable.

    funny!

    When your fiancé's father is the one to inform you his son is dating somebody else, how do you react? Grad school dropout Rena's answer is to steal the new girlfriend's dog. Now she's living with a dog she doesn't know how to care for in a building that doesn't allow dogs. Rena quickly discovers she has to take the dog outside every day, but that's a problem since the building's super spends his day watching the tenants' comings and goings and a friend of Rena's ex also lives in the building. Dealing with the breakup and sudden acquiring of a dog (what's she supposed to feed "Big Guy" anyway?) should be enough, but her family decides to throw some more at Rena. Her sister might be abandoning her husband and religion while Mom has found new love and thinks Rena should have a new boyfriend too. Can Rena really straighten out her life when she's still harboring the dog?

    With all of that Gone to the Dogs should be depressing, but it's just funny. I had to laugh when, upon learning Ron is her mom's date, Rena thinks, "Suddenly the serial killer looked-dare I say it?-dangerously attractive. And very employed. He looked like a guy with potential, with features you might be able to work with." That's Rena. The guy's a serial killer if he's for her, but has potential if he's with someone else. My favorite part was when Rena took Chuck (her setup) home after her mom conned him into having dinner at the restaurant where Rena is a waitress. In trying to suss out how Chuck will react to her dognapping, she asks what the worst thing he's ever done is. The conversation that follows is terrific.

    lighthearted chick lit tale

    Brian displayed his guts when he telephoned his fiancée Rena the waitress to end their seven year relationship. Angry especially over his cowardly means of dumping her, an outraged Rena kidnaps his dog Tilly only to learn the canine with a girl's name is a boy and as an aside her ex (that is Rena's ex and not the dog formerly called Tilly) has a new girlfriend.

    To make matters worse for Rena, her late fifties mom has a new guy Dr. Ron in her life and her sister's perfect Orthodox Jewish marriage is falling apart. Her family decides to find a man for Rena; their latest selection is kind hearted but ethical Chuck, who tells her, he likes her, but she needs to move forward starting with returning formerly Tilly to Brian. Rena blunders making her conclude that to err may be human, but no one especially the errant one forgives.

    This lighthearted chick lit tale is fun to read due to the interaction between Rena the neurotic who expects her family to blind date her with a serial killer and her stereotyped (by her) family, who serve as her straight men and women for her asides. Amusing, fans will enjoy this frolic as Rena wails to no one there Who Let the Dogs Out (nod to the Baha Men) and this is not Cleveland.
