Gonks Go Beat/I've Gotta Horse [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
Released in 1965, the British films Gonks Go Beat and I've Gotta Horse are obscure even to aficionados of pop and rock musicals. This CD combines the soundtracks of both of them onto one disc. While it's a boon for collectors, as the original LPs are extremely rare, musically it's a rough ride even for British Invasion fanatics due both to its uneven quality and ridiculously incongruous mix of styles. The soundtrack to the tacky science fiction film Gonks Go Beat is the better value, if only because it has contributions by three notable British Invasion acts.
None of those tracks Lulu's "Choc Ice" and "The Only One," Graham Bond's "Harmonica," and the Nashville Teens' "Poor Boy" are brilliant, though they're fairly good, and the Bond and Nashville Teens cuts have been hard to find on CD. These contributions are brilliant, however, when weighed against most of the rest of the LP, an extraordinarily erratic mishmash of lousy teen idol pop, crummy throwbacks to pre-rock musicals, and mediocre orchestral soundtrack music. Amidst that jumble do lie a couple of half-decent numbers in the Titan Sound Orchestra's slightly Shadows-like instrumental "Burn Up" and the Long & the Short's generic British R&B rave-up "Take This Train," which makes this album one to listen to with the CD remote track changer handy. Yet more aggravating is I've Gotta Horse, featuring British pop star Billy Fury as both singer and actor. While Fury does sing about half the tracks, none of them are on par with his better material, let alone the sounds swamping the globe by British Invasion innovators in the mid-'60s. Indeed, some of the tunes are inane, starting with the theme song, lyrically tailored to Fury's well-known real-life love of animals and boasting some pretty poor grammar in the spelling of the title. Some of Fury's contributions are rock-less corny musical numbers, and while the Gamblers do supply a blast of authentic British Invasion rock with "I Cried All Night," it's on the so-so side. Country-pop balladeers the Bachelors add a couple performances, but overall it's hard to imagine either film or soundtrack holding much appeal for young audiences of 1965. Nowadays both it and Gonks Go Beat have their kitsch nostalgia factor, as well as the odd cut of value to the British Invasion enthusiast. For that specialty audience, this CD has its place, and is exceptionally well packaged, with lengthy historical liner notes including many appropriate vintage pictures, posters, and album sleeves.
