A TIMELY, UPLIFTING STORY ABOUT FOLLOWING ONE'S DREAM
The journey required positive thinking, humor, willpower and stubborn determination.
Friends questioned: Have you lost your mind? --Why on earth would you buy a sailboat in Turkey, of all places, when you live near the San Francisco Bay? -- Especially a boat you know nothing about? --Do you even know how to sail? With no prior sailing experience, and less than four weeks training on their sight-unseen sailboat, a father and son cast off from Turkey and head west into the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic. Their implausible story is packed with short episodes that draw the reader into the action: Stress as rookie sailors.--Never-ending funny situations that surrounded their travels, especially by way of mishaps.--Encounters with interesting and strange people, not to mention pirates.--Countless ports and countries they sailed into and passed.--The coming together of a father and son with full support of the oldest son, wife and mother.--All this while the father discovers life after retirement.

Risk, threat, confidence, courage, competence, and the triumph of survival are central themes to this outstanding true story. The author and son put aside the daily comfort of life's routines to challenge their physical and intellectual competence as well as demonstrate a central value in their lives, that whatever comes there way albeit physical, intellectual, interpersonal, or emotional challenges they have, or can develop, the 'right stuff' to survive. The tale of their year's journey, told in the narrative of a fine story-teller, takes the reader along as they face the multitude of challenges and frustrations, both human mechanical, and physical that must be solved for the adventure, and adventurers, to survive. It is also a tale of the eternal solidity and dynamic evolution of mature, loving human relationships within a family: father and sons, husband and wife, adult parents and children, brothers. The account directly addresses what it means to be a man of character and determination. Quite a character and quite determined! With all this as background, the author regales us with an artist's vision of the beauty of the sea, the coastal landscapes, the night sky at sea, the vast isolation of an ocean voyage. 'Gonzo' is a delightful telling that takes the reader along on an admittedly crazy adventure few would have the skills or courage to attempt but are satisfied to join vicariously in this reading.
