Overview

Just tell me what's good!

For those who have a taste for accessible, affordable wines and a distaste for comparative shopping.

With tens of thousands of wines competing for attention, tough economic times, and time-pressed wine drinkers, there has never been a better time to buy popular wines. Good, Better, Best Wines is the first book that focuses exclusively on "big brands," breaking them down to good, better and best, and by price. Each taste-tested wine is accompanied by a photo of the bottle, for ease of identification, as well as tasting notes, food matches, trade secrets, and more. Wine lovers will save the time they'd be comparing to have more time for tasting. Coverage includes:

•White wines-blends, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio/ Gris, Fume/Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and others

•Red wines-blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah/Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and others

•Rosés and sparkling wines

•The basics on buying wines, from vintages to screwcaps, and storing, serving, and tasting wine

What People are saying about this

Andrew Jefford
They're big, they're out there, but they're not all the same. This book cuts a sure course through the ocean of popular wines. Carolyn's enthusiasm and stylistic panache tells you what you need to know — and fast. (Andrew Jefford, columnist for Decanter and The World of Fine Wine Magazine)
Richard Best
It's about time someone of Carolyn's' calibre stepped forward to champion these humble yet satisfying wines. The first paragraph alone is worth the price of admission. (Richard Best, The Frugal Oenophile)
Natalie MacLean
Finally, a wine book for the rest of us! Carolyn Hammond sniffs and swirls her way through the liquor store so that you don't have to. The genius of her approach is that she recognizes we want tasty wines that are reasonably priced. Brava Carolyn! (Natalie MacLean, author of Red, White and Drunk All Over and editor of www.nataliemaclean.com)
Billy Munnelly
We're in an era when cheap wine can be very good and Good Better Best Wines helps you get the best. Innovative concept with tons of good stuff to buy and enjoy. My kind of wine book. (Billy Munnelly, Author, Billy's Best Bottles)
Lynne Webb
This book is a fabulous resource. It really filled a niche that needed to be addressed. (Lynne Webb, Publisher, Mygourmetconnection.com)

According to Carolyn Evans Hammond, author of "Good, Better, Best Wines: A No-Nonsense Guide to Popular Wines," you don't have to spend a lot to get a good-tasting wine. You just have to know what you're looking for. In "Good, Better, Best Wines," she ranks a wide variety of big brand wines that cost no more than $15 a bottle! After all, more than 90% of the wines sold in the United States cost less than $15. And, according to The International Wine and Spirit Record, the United States is poised to become the world's biggest wine consumer by 2012. I love "Good, Better, Best Wines" because it's very clear. The five parts of the book include Wine Basics; White Wines; Red Wines; Rose and Sparkling Wines; and, Bargain Wines, Dessert Wines and Party Wines. And then each part is broken down into kinds of wine, such as Chardonnay, Merlot, etc. Within each category, the author shows several wines and labels them as being "good," "better" or "best." A clear picture of each wine is shown so it's easy to recognize in the store, and the flavor of each wine is described. Sprinkled throughout the book are fascinating facts about wines and food pairings. This book is so user-friendly. And the smaller size makes it easily portable so you can take it with you to the wine store. "Good, Better, Best Wines" makes a wonderful hostess, couples or wedding gift. Include a bottle or two of recommended wine, and your recipients will love it!

I saw this book recommended by Amazon as a result of a purchase of "Wine For Dummies" a long, long time ago. I'm quick with the delete button, but was intrigued and decided to take a look. My wife and I enjoy wine and have found we are enjoying a glass more often during the week and not just for dinner out or special events. I like the promise of a book that rates affordable and findable wines under $15. Alas, I live in a small town in Iowa, how many wines in the grocery store are going to be in the book. I can say I was stunned to see many old friends and many I can't wait to meet on the pages of Carolyn's book. I rather enjoyed her easy to read and lively writing style and the pictures make buying wine even easier. My advice would be buy two, one for you and one for a friend(so they don't borrow yours and forget to return it!). I would also grab a pen and make your copy into your own personal wine journal. I just recommended the book to my local grocery store manager and encouraged him to sell the book in the wine aisle! This book is definitely a BEST BUY!

I have purchased Carolyn's book yesterday and totally excited about it. I love it. Starting from the name to all the details. She has gone out of her way to compare all the big name wines, and did not stop at that, she looked for quality too. I highly recommend this because no one has done this before for average consumer like us. This shows her passion, and love for wine!! The cover is so charming and the breakdowns of all wines, the tasting notes categorized by types are really cool. Price is affordable. I found Rodney Strong is in her list, this is my latest discovery (: So much to learn from this little savvy well researched book, amazing! Genuine, great sense of style and incredible knowledge! So a very BIG thanks to Carolyn for all her hard work and thinking of all the winos all over the world! Way to go!!!

When it comes to wine, your "wants" are pretty simple: a good wine at a price you can afford, that's stocked at your local wine shop or supermarket. You don't need a lot of detail, just the stripped-down, jargon-free facts: how the wine tastes, how much it costs, and if you'll be able to find it. Good Better Best Wines gives you just that. It reveals in plain English, the good, better, and very best wines for the money you're willing to spend--along with photos of over 250 clearly labeled bottles to make shopping easier. Good Better Best Wines is the first book to rank the best-selling wines in the US. Hope you enjoy the read. This is what other wine pros are saying: "They're big, they're out there, but they're not all the same. This book cuts a sure course through the ocean of popular wines. Carolyn's enthusiasm and stylistic panache tells you what you need to know -- and fast." - Andrew Jefford, Columnist for Decanter and The World of Fine Wine magazine. "It's about time someone of Carolyn's' calibre stepped forward to champion these humble yet satisfying wines. Lynne Webb, Publisher, Mygourmetconnection.com "We're in an era when cheap wine can be very good and Good Better Best Wines helps you get the best.
