Good Beyond Evil is the story of a handful of ordinary people who risked their lives to save the lives of one Jewish family. It begins in the spring of 1939, weaves through the post-liberation period and ends in 1997 with a ceremony at Yad Vashem. The acceptance of two of the main characters into the Community of 'Righteous Among the Nations' provokes humbling reflection on the richness of opportunities enjoyed by members of the family who were saved compared with the narrowly circumscribed lives of those who saved them. Set in the broader context of Czechoslovakia's short history, its democratic institutions and endemic anti-Semitism, Good Beyond Evil is a also a requiem for a once-flourishing Jewish community.

I think this book was outstanding. Not only do I absolutely adore the author, but the writing and stories are impeccable. There are never enough books about the holocaust because there is always another story to be told. To hear the story of the holocaust told in the perspective of an actual survivor is so moving and powerful. The way Eva has written the book is so devastatingly beautiful that you cannot help but continue to read on. The first page of the book says “what I wanted to preserve was not the horror of the war, the enormity of our individual and collective losses, or the pain or survival. Rather, I struggled to save from oblivion the deeds of a handful of people without whose help neither my family nor I would have survived” This book is not about how Eva and her family survived the war, but it is a way to repay a portion of her debt to the woman and her daughter whose selfless courage saved them from the Nazis. Eva’s stories show how surviving the holocaust has shaped her into the wonderful woman that she is today; that she wouldn’t be the strong, independent woman that so many people love and admire today. This is an absolute must read and I recommend it to anyone..

An informative, thought provoking, and powerful book

Eva Gossman writes in an open and thoughtful way about her memories of how the kind and courageous actions of extraordinary people saved and impacted her life and outlook. This is a deep and engaging narrative which I strongly recommend. They ought to have this out on the shelves in Barnes and Noble!
