Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
While Good Charlotte don't, by any stretch of the imagination, boldly go where no band has gone before, their wry pop-punk has enough energy and winking good humor to win over all but the most jaded listener. Kicking off with the self-aware riff-fest "The Anthem," the band -- centered around the brotherly VJ tandem that hosts MTV's All Things Rock -- take on the usual targets, with mostly good results. "My Old Man" gets his comeuppance on one sneering rave-up, while frontman Joel Everly pins his heart on his sleeve for the "Riot Girl" of his dreams on a swooning post-Undertones lovefest. "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" is appropriately riled up -- a mood that's ...

"Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" is appropriately riled up -- a mood that's suited by a pounding rhythm that owes a bit to Iggy's "Lust for Life" -- while "Emotionless" turns things down a notch, adding strings and a swirling atmospheric arrangement that shows the quintet has the potential to outshine the sometimes monochromatic colorings of their straight-ahead punk rock.
All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Punk-ska quintet Good Charlotte often sounds like a cross between Green Day and Smash Mouth on its self-titled debut album, and the band members also show evidence of a familiarity with the Clash. The beats come fast and furious, the simple guitar chords noisily fill the middle range, and the vocals are sung with snotty belligerence. "Little Things," the lead-off track, sets the tone; it's about the petty humiliations an outsider can encounter at high school. Elsewhere, the lyrics speak of musical aspirations in the face of 9-to-5 pressures, condemn absent fathers, and berate ex-girlfriends who would rather date football heroes. This is all standard-issue stuff, and in fact the only odd element here is an occasionally expressed religious interest. The band members all give profuse thanks to God in their acknowledgments in the CD booklet, and God also turns up here and there in the lyrics, such as in "Complicated" "giving thanks to the lord, and I pray every day" and in the hidden bonus track, apparently titled "Thank You Mom" "You showed me how to love my god". Religion can turn up in the strangest places, of course, but such remarks seem incongruous among lyrics that casually employ minor vulgarities and have a generally angry tone, performed by a group that favors tattoos and extensive piercings in its photographs. Good Charlotte can't quite be called a CCM group on the basis of its debut album, but the band's songs definitely send mixed messages. [The CD was also released with a bonus track.]
Entertainment Weekly - David Hiltbrand
Crosscurrents of anger and optimism rip through CharlotteĀ¹s heady virgin voyage. The young Annapolis, Md. quintet has an astringent punk style with crafty pop underpinnings.

    Good Charlotte ROCKS!!!

Good Charlotte ROCKS!!! Don't call them posers, cuz they aren't!!! I can understand if u don't LIKE GC, but to say they aren't talented is a lie. Not only that, but their lyrics are honest, too.

    I like it

Ok, I was introduced to GC from a friend. I've been a fan or them from their second album. I listened to this CD becuae it's well......them. You can't love a band without listening to all their cds. But personaly I think the second one is better. The third is well.... the third. It's kinda corky. But this album gets a 4. Bravo GC.

    Fairly Good

First of all, before you even think of buying this CD and you have never even heard Good Charlotte, please don't buy this album first. The singing on this cd is so bad in some parts that you just want to fast forward (only in some parts though). However, the lyrics rock and are so full of meaning that any young listener can relate to them. So the lyrics rock, but some of those words are almost ruined when the almost rap the songs. Now if your teh devotated GC fan that I am then you will need to listen to this album several times before you really begin to appreciate it. If your not a devoted fan then I suggest you buy their second album "The Young and the Hopeless" or their newest album "The Chronicles of Life and Death." The best songs on this CD, are "Little Things," "Wardorfworldwide," and "Motivavation Proclimation." You should listen to/buy one(or both) of their other albums first. Otherwise good lyrics so-so singing! I love GC!

    Good Charlotte's Rockin Debut

This cd really rocks. this is GC's first cd and they are the best punk rock band yet. Catchy tunes like little things and east coast anthem show that these guys rock. buy it you'll be surprised how good it is.

    A GREAT CD

This cd is a great cd. I think that this cd is a lot more "punkish" then they're newer cd. But this cd is for high school kids who are outcasts and that get called a "freak" "goth" or "loser" on an everyday bases. Most people don't really have that problem. But for the kids who do they should get this cd. Because it's songs like "The Click" that really help you out. And personally I would know. And people who say this cd sucks are stupid and most likely don't go through being called a "loser" or a "freak", so that don't understand as much.

    NOT PUNK! NOT GOOD!

Despite the fact that they are marketed as a "punk" band, Good Charlotte is definately NOT punk. They aren't good either. Sure, they dress the part, but listen to the music. It's not punk...it's pop. And it's bland, generic, uninteresting pop at that! Don't waste you money on this unless you'd like to hear N'Sync with guitars added! I only gave it 1 star because 0 stars wasn't an option!

Stick this CD in the Microwave PLEASE

How many times will we see the same junk in the ‘pop/punk’ music scene? It’s always the same: a bunch of deprived youth that were bullied in high school forms a ‘hardcore’ punk band that let’s kids who are in the same situation relate to them. It really is just a lame excuse for music in which the only objective is to get rich. Sure they can sing about how they are poor losers just like the people who buy this music, but you’re just another sucker if you believe that. The band has the musical and songwriting talent that is equivalent to groups such as Britney Spears or N Sync. Exactly, they don’t write music for a good reason because when they do it SUX. If you enjoy overproduced punk in which each song is just a recycling of the same guitar riff, then go ahead buy it. But if that doesn’t sound good to you spend your money on The Get Up Kids, Copeland, or Metallica (prior to the Load album). Good Charlotte disgraces the East Coast punk reputation.

    Comme ci, comme ca

I expected more from the band that brought me "The Anthem," but this ain't bad. The originals are cool, but most of the album is based on real life. It's a nice change of pace, but I really don't enjoy nonfiction very much.
