Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Mother needs to go out for a while, but Carl, the family Rottweiler, will watch the baby while she is gone. As soon as mother leaves, Carl wastes no time in helping the baby have fun! They jump on the bed, try on Mother's jewelry, slide down the laundry chute, and swim in the fish tank. The exquisite illustrations in this near wordless book will have readers of all ages gleefully cheering Carl and baby.

    I Also Recommend:

May we all have the spirit of a dog!

In a world of excessive words, the "Good Dog, Carl" series reminds me that "actions speak louder than words"! Our words may say one thing, but our actions/body language tell the truth.
Do you know what 'dog' spells backwards? God. Do you know how they are alike? You can turn your back on them, abuse them, neglect them . . . & when you turn around all they want to do is to love you!
Good Dog Carl reminds me that God (d-o-g) is there in everything I do . . . watching over my every action . . . but always with me 24/7. Only I can find the quietness within to hear the 'barking' of Divine Love.

Fun book for kids and teachers

This book is a fun one for teaching dialogue. Students can write what they think the characters are saying. Very creative responses!

    Good Dog Carl

Without a single word, this book tells a huge story. It is about one day in the life of a dog that is left to babysit.

    Good Dog, Carl

Good Dog Carl is my grandson's all-time favorite of all the books we read. He never tires of it and all the other Carl books, as well. I don't think he realizes I am actually teling the story from the marvelous illustrations. He loves it so much he wanted to have Carl at his birthday party. Fortunately, we have our own Rotweiler, Hansel, who was able to attend.

    more from this reviewer

    Carl!

My brother has his own rotweiler so this is the book "he" always gets for new babies. (I buy it and make him sign it) it is a cute picture book... there are no words throughout the book - fair warning! But the pictures are engaging and easy to bable on about. My neice talks more through this book than the other ones she has memorized because there are no words! I love Carl! I wish my brother's dog was as trusting as Carl is!!!

ALEXANDRA DAY - GOOD DOG CARL

Alexandra Day's Carl series has been amazing for years - the cardboard versions were VERY loved by my children (now teens) much like a certain stuffed animal in another children's book - but Carl is always there to rescue the baby, take care of the baby, and the "baby" who "reads" the story usually changes much of their "story" (there tend to be VERY few words at the beginning and end - it's all GLORIOUS paintings) - I am proud to give her cardboard books to the newest little one in my life, baby Mae :0) xoxo YaYa

The Carl books are the best ever!

Alexandra Day's illustrations are lovely and evocative. We started reading these books when my daughter was about the same age as Madeliene, the baby in the books. It was a joy to share these books with my child as we snuggled in bed with three or four dogs at our feet. Every child should know Carl.

A perfect first "reader" for any child!

All of Alexandra Day's "Carl" books are beautifully illustrated and tell a story through pictures. My children and now my grandchildren started learning to read through telling me (and any other adult who would sit down for a minute) the story of Carl and Baby's adventures. Having had us show them once how to look at the pictures and tell the story, they all discovered they loved reading.

    An old-time book

An old-time 'dog' book in the tradition of the Little Rascals where an older brother is placed in charge of watching his little brother but instead introduces him to all kinds of fun, that is harmless, but unacceptable by their mom. Great fun for all kids.

Bought the book, and the dog

The reading of, 'Carl' became a tratition in our family. We even bought 'Jake' the Johnson version of Carl. When I asked my son what he wanted for his 16th birthday his reply touched my heart. 'Dad, just read me Carl the Dog one more time.' Now, what's not to love!

Carl charms kids and adults alike...

Alexandra Day's books are appealing to many: children, adults, dog owners, and of course, Rott owners. I acquired my first female Rott in 1994, but I didn't know about the Carl books till later. A friend gave me my first Carl book. I couldn't believe how well Alexandra Day conveyed the warmth and spirit of this dog breed, at least how I know it. Each book shows Carl taking care of the baby and having a new adventure. I have the whole collection of Day's books now. Alexandra Day's stories are imaginative, so cute, and funny. I have read them to small children and the illustrations are fun for all to interpret. Whether you are a Rottweiler owner or not, any small child (even adult!), and/or dog owner would find fun and adventure with the Carl series by Alexandra Day.

    We love Carl!

When we browsed upon the Carl series at our local Barnes and Noble we instantly fell in love. We also had our own Carl (Shadow) and the artistry in this series really does portray the Rottweiller breed. We miss our boy who is no longer with us, but we have the books that always bring back the happy memories. Our little girl who will be one next week also loves turning the pages...someday she will have her own Carl.

Great book for a child's imagination!

I grew up 'reading' the Good Dog Carl books. The great thing that separates this collection of books from other childrens books is that they don't have very many words at all. It gives young children the opporitunity to 'read' to their parents or siblings. Kids can look at the pictures and tell you the story as they see it. It is a wonderful way to see a child's imagination in full bloom. The beautiful illustrations make this an enjoyable book for children and adults alike. It is wonderful to hear a child tell the story in thier own way. Have your kids 'read' this book to you and you'll see what I mean!

    Outstanding and creative

My daughter is now 12 yrs old and for yrs has collected every Carl title. To this date we all get excited everytime we see a new Title. The books have helped her use her imagination as she puts words to the story. The pictures are breath taking and the details in the pictures are amazing. My daughter has grown up with a rottweiler who sleeps with her and these books have been a real means of enjoyment. My daughter plans to save these books for your own children to enjoy some day.

    Words Don't Do It Justice!

This wonderful book is in the school library where I work and is enjoyed by people of all ages. The illustrations are beautiful and tell the story superbly. Children love to share this book with others, and teachers use it effectively as a spring board to writing and oral language activities. Guaranteed to make you smile!
