Overview

Alton Brown is a foodie phenomenon: a great cook, a very funny guy, and—underneath it all—a science geek who’s as interested in the chemistry of cooking as he is in eating. (Well, almost.) Here, finally, are the books that Brown’s legion of fans have been salivating for—two volumes that together will provide an unexpurgated record of his long-running, award-winning Food Network TV series, Good Eats

From “Pork Fiction” (on baby back ribs), to “Citizen Cane” (on caramel sauce), to “Oat Cuisine” (on oatmeal), every hilarious episode is represented. Each book—the second will be published in fall 2010—is illustrated with behind-the-scenes photos taken on the Good Eats set. Each contains more than 140 recipes and more than 1,000 photographs and illustrations, along with explanations of techniques, lots of food-science information (of course!), and more food puns, food jokes, and food trivia than you can shake a wooden spoon at.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Part wizardly cook, part science geek, part stand-up comedian, Alton Brown has roasted, stirred, and baked his way into our consciousness on Great Eats, Iron Chef, Feasting on Asphalt, and other TV food shows. Good Eats: The Early Years is the first of two books that will expose every oven nook and cabinet cranny of his long-lived Food Network cooking show. In addition to the more than 140 recipes trumpeted in the subtitle, the book contains more than 1,000 (count 'em) photographs and illustrations; and at least that many food puns, jokes, trivia, and asides.
Publishers Weekly
Every so often a cookbook comes along that wishes it were a television show. Brown's latest effort actually is a television show, or rather, a marathon of all 80 episodes from the first six seasons of his Food Network hit. Egotistical yet thrifty, Brown interviews himself in the introduction, describing this work as “four hundred pages of liner notes.” And that is sadly accurate. For all its girth, there are merely 140 recipes, ranging from chocolate syrup to butternut dumplings with brown butter and sage. That these entries appear sequentially exemplifies the book's biggest problem; it is organized by TV episode number, causing readers to repeatedly visit the index to make sure they're not missing anything. The roast turkey is toward the beginning of the book, for example, but the turkey salad is hiding out somewhere in the middle. “Recipes that never made it into the show!” are promised, but good luck identifying them, and is that really a bonus? Accompanying each meal is a chart labeled, “Knowledge Concentrate.” These contain the fun, quasi-scientific facts that are the author's bread and butter (“The higher the egg-to-dairy ratio, the firmer the custard”). The remainder of the pages are cluttered with photo strips, sketches and squiggly lines, lest you get bored and turn on the tube. (Oct.)

    great buy

This book is a great investment! If you love his show it contains the same humor and wit, and wonderful information with things he wasnt able to fit into the time slot of the show. Also if you are cook that is looking for tips on diff ways of cooking or substituting ingredients.. this book is great! he explains how each ingredient your using works ..so of course it makes it easier to sub ingredients for what you may have instead. its the greatest reference book I own.

    I love Alton Brown!

I bought this book sight-unseen because 1. I'm a huge fan of Alton Brown's series 'Good Eats', 2. I always learn something new no matter the subject he covers, and 3. I'm always wishing I had an exact memory for the finer details of shows I've already deleted. If you've never heard of Alton, I highly recommend checking out this book. If you're already a fan, you won't be disappointed... He delivers what you'd expect and more!

    He's so clever...........

Alton Brown is one of the most entertaining AND intelligent personalities on TV. I really appreciate his TEACHING about food. This book was bought because of that and it does not disappoint. It is full of information about everything a cook wants/needs to know.....and lots of stuff you don't NEED, but truly appreciate finding out about.

    I Also Recommend:

this book cover caught my eye because I recently started watching Alton Brown every night and wanted to have his recipes in a book instead of hurrying to try to write them down.

I love this book and the recipes are to die for. I also loved this book because it is educational with regard to learning about food, how ingredients work together and the history of food. VERY interesting

If you love the show you will Love this book!

This is a very well written comprehensive cookbook. It has a format that follows the first episodes of the show and has an interesting variety of recipes and techniques. It is also humorous and has neat little insider anecdotes. The only downfall is the clunky size of the book, but I have a stand to hold my cookbooks.

    Alton at his best

Alton presents the science behind the cooking. In this book he gives more detailed information about each recipe and its ingredients. There is also behind the scenes little known facts as to how the episodes were made. A really good read if you like the show and want more of it.

A great guide when kitchen shopping

I'm a big fan of Alton Brown's "Good Eats" show and really like the sections in the show when he goes shopping for various kitchen appliances, tools and the like. I particularly like when he goes into details of what to look for and what his preferences are. This book is a great collection of those recommendations and I find it very helpful when I'm shopping for a new piece of kitchen equipment or just wondering what particular thing does.

A guide to the early episodes

I love having the recipes, techniques and history that Alton Brown puts into every show in a written format. While not as funny as the show itself, it is just as informative.

    Not your average cookbook

I actually sit down and read GE's like a novel. It only took a little while to get through the first half. It's a learning experience. It'll give you things to say AH about! And the recipes are good too...

AT last - I love fruitcake

I found it very entertaining to learn about some of the foods and the utensils-in fact, I discovered that a "whatcamacallit" that I bought years ago at an auction is something people used to bake their fruitcakes in...and the fruitcake recipe is absolutely yummy - I've made 2 batches so far. Alton Brown is fun to read and you can learn while you cook.

Must Own for any Good Eats Fan

This book was fantastic. Great for recapping the first 6 seasons of the show with little behind the scenes tidbits thrown in. Doesn't include ALL the recipes shown in each episode but does have most of them, AND includes ones Alton would have liked to add if there was time. Very funny. I bought this for myself but it would also make a great gift for any food geek.

    Truly a funny book

You can not put this book down, the recipes are entertaining and use full. A beautiful, knowledge driven book that Alton must be proud of for us to use. Funny bits of knowledge we can all read and put to work. A very good workhorse of cooking.

Alton Brown's Good Eats The Early Years

I gave this book as a Birthday present for a friend and we both have enjoyed it. Yes, so many of the recipes are the ones we have seen on the TV but just like Alton the book is also a HOOT!! His wonderful recipes accompanied by some background on the episode shoot is certainly entertaining. Especially the tomato garden one. I would recommend this book to all fans of Alton Brown.
