Good Egg

Meet Egg. Cuter than a button, enormously personable, and talented, too. Say "sit," and Egg sits. Good Egg! Say "roll over," and egg rolls over. What a good Egg! Of course, Egg does all of this with a toddler's help, who lifts the flaps and pulls the tabs and operates the wiggle behind the wiggle-waggle. But that's the most fun part: interacting with the Egg.

Overview

Then comes the pay-off. "Speak," is the command, and children will crack up in delight and surprise with what happens next.

Created by Barney Saltzberg, Good Egg is that rarest of rare books where utter simplicity is utterly irresistible. The Egg has neither eyes nor smile nor furrowed brow, yet exudes an adorable, eager-to-please charm. No sentence is longer than two words, yet in the eight board book pages, an engaging story is told.  Add the flaps and the tabs and the pleasure of movement, and Good Egg will be read again and again.

Editorial Reviews

Julie Just
The charm is all in Saltzberg's ingenious manipulations—there are pull-tabs, turning wheels and even a striped beachball on a string to throw at a Velcro catcher.

The purpose of the egg-shaped Post-it notes set in the cover was not apparent, so I asked the publisher and I learned that this is just the review copy and not the form that will be sold in the stores. The cover displays a large white egg cut-out with the words "good egg" printed on it. First we see this egg—then on the next spread there is a one-word command: "sit." The arrow indicates an action, and it is to lift the full-page flap. Then an egg in all its glory is seated on a chair and the text simply says "good egg!" And so it goes as the egg is directed to lie down, roll over, shake, catch and speak. All the pages have an associated action pull tab, flip, etc. Actions such as catch are merely moving a ball from one piece of Velcro on the left-hand page to another spot of Velcro on the right-hand page. Always the phrase "good egg!" follows each action. The big surprise comes at the end when the egg does speak. The back cover states "It's so much fun, you'll crack up!" It is different and a strange mix, but certainly fun for kids who enjoy pull-tab books. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

My 2 yr old has loved this book since he was 1. It is an adorable and simple book. He loves to interact with every page. Now that he is 2, he can already almost read (memorized, not really reading) it himself. The only downside was that he has ripped out some of the interactive parts because one time he got a hold of the book without supervision when he was younger. I got a 2nd copy for reading. Well worth the money!
