It is hard to convince children that healthy food and exercise are good for you. Little Critter, a mop top cartoon character learns about a healthy lifestyle in school. The text, written in first person, captures the personality of young Critter, who speaks in short simple sentences using simple vocabulary. The illustrations enhance the text by giving us some clues to Critter's emotions and the feelings of his friends and family. The page reads, "The next day, I made lunch for Mom, Dad and Little sister." The cartoon illustration gives much more information, showing the pride in Critter's body language, the mess on the table, the perplexed look on Dad's face and the tongue sticking out of Little Sister's mouth. Without the illustrations the storyline can be quite shallow, but Critter is a young animal and does not have the vocabulary to give voice to his emotions. The reader needs to patiently read both the words and pictures. Because it take some time to do this I do not recommend this as a read aloud unless it is one on one, but it is good support for a theme on good health and can be added to your existing healthy living library. This title is part of "The New Adventures of Little Critter" series. 2004, HarperCollins Publishers, Ages 2 to 5.
