Barnes & Noble - Dave Gil de Rubio
This Barnes & Noble exclusive double-disc pairs Vince Guaraldi's classic soundtrack to Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the entire Peanuts gang's 1965 Christmas TV special with a tribute disc, 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas. To commemorate the special's 40th anniversary, Grammy-winning pianist and composer David Benoit assembled a musical homage featuring a host of R&B and jazz luminaries.
Tampering with songs that have become so indelibly linked with childhood memories is risky, but Benoit succeeds by maintaining the sprightly arrangements and festive mood of Guaraldi's originals. Visions of Snoopy doing his happy dance spring to mind upon hearing the piano-driven "Linus and Lucy," peppered with saxophonist Dave Koz's riffs and a samba-flavored rhythm, while guitarist Norman Brown recalls George Benson on a version of "Skating" that bobs and weaves over crackling riffs and subtle scatting. Elsewhere, vocalists keep the mood flowing -- whether it's Brian McKnight crooning his way through "Christmas Time Is Here" over brushed drums, or Chaka Khan delivering a spare, torchy take on "The Christmas Song." Benoit does take liberties, adding a pair of songs not originally found on the show's soundtrack -- the Rippingtons' Mannheim Steamroller-flavored rendition of "Red Baron" and Toni Braxton's sultry run through "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" -- along with the Benoit-penned "Just Like Me," with vocals by Vanessa Williams, a tear-jerking nod to the scraggly tree at the center of the show's storyline. Mixing holiday nostalgia with snappy new tunes - and at a nice two-for-one price -- Good Grief! is just plain great.

I can't believe the average is 3 STARS!!

This is the greatest smooth jazz Christmas CD ever produced. Each song within is easily worth the price of the collection itself. These are timeless classics, folk. I promise you won't be sorry. Buy now!

    Starbucks Version

My wife got me the first disc three years ago when Starbucks coffee was selling it. She got it for VERY cheap and it was simply one of the best presents I received in a long time. This CD is a must have for jazz lovers, Peanuts lovers, and those in the mood for great holiday music. Keep it simple I always say. This new double CD has a track which I don't have (the last track) but that's okay for the price she paid.

    Very disappointing

Wow! What a disappointment! The standard saying - don't fix what ain't broke - certainly applies here. Listened to the entire new release - lousy - just lousy. Benoit ruined what made the original so perfect - innocence, kids voices, simple accompanyment. What a waste.

    Very Good !!!!!

I do recommend! Can't beat 2 for the price of 1. The 40 years one is better w/ fuller arrangements. I just don't like the red baron song by the rippingtons. Otherwise it's good.
