    A Great Start to Healthy Eating

    I love this "diet" because it's about good, workable, flexible eating habits. The soup gets you started, but is only a springboard to healthier eating. There are good menu ideas that start you out with a reasonable, workable diet. This goes far beyond soup. Soup is known to be a great filler and appetite suppresant. This soup is also nutritious. A generous bowl will just about meet suggested vegetable servings for an adult. I slightly vary the soup to my own taste and available ingredients. I usually omit the zucchini, because it tends to get mushy. Instead, I add edamame beans (frozen, shelled) to amp up the protein and fiber. I will also often either switch or add Swiss chard for the spinach. I make the soup fairly thick, because you can always water it down with broth, water, or more tomatoes. Also, to save time and money, I use a lot of frozen vegetables: chopped spinach, frozen green beans, frozen edamame beans. My favorite extra vegetable is sugar pea pods (again cheaper frozen). Next time I am also going to include mushrooms, as they are considered (by dr. Weil and others) as an important nutritional ingredient. It's easy to keep this diet fairly low carb, if that's your choice. The soup has very few starchy vegetables, so it's no problem. Choose meal selections (salmon salad for lunch, yogurt and berries for breakfast) to keep the carbs low. I even use black soy beans (in a can) for my low carb "chili". It's also great for single people, since the soup can be put in smaller containers, frozen, and taken out as needed. Just keep around frozen shrimp, a bit of dairy, lean meats/poultry from the deli, a few pantry staples, and some salad greens and you are good to go. Furthermore, there are great ideas if you dine out. All in all,what this diet does is give you a good eating plan. I admit, I have fallen off now and then because certain temptations take their toll... But, I always come back and am glad I do.

    Good book, tuff diet!

    This book is designed well, very clear, and well organized. The diet on the other hand is not easy! First, be prepared, my grocery bill was about $300.00 for the week! You must like cooking as well. Don't get me wrong, the food is pretty good, although the basic soup gets old.real quick, but the options are good. The diet varies a lot during the week which is good and it works but it takes a great deal of planning and work. Over all, pretty good but buyer beware.
