Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Tima Murrell
Martha the talking dog (from the popular public television show Martha Speaks!) is frightened that she is cursed. Martha lives with her human friend, Helen. She hears about bad luck from Carole, another friend. She begins to wonder if she is cursed after she walks under a ladder and breaks a mirror. She sees people stumbling and making mistakes around her, and she assumes that her bad luck is contagious. Helen is finally able to convince Martha that mistakes happen and none of the things around her happen because of a curse. This book was fun and easy to read. The illustrations fit well with the story and were very humorous. The story did a great job of explaining superstitions. The difficulty of the words fit well with the reading level identified by the publisher. Includes web addresses for sellers of additional Martha books, as well as a site for children to play games and learn more about Martha and the lessons she teaches. Reviewer: Tima Murrell

Meet the Author

Susan Meddaugh studied art and illustration and has worked as a designer, art director, and freelance illustrator. She now lives in Sherborn, Massachusetts with her son and three shelter dogs. She has created and illustrated many books for children. In 1998 she was awarded the New England Book Award, given by the New England Booksellers Association to recognize a body of work.

Martha was a real dog who lived with Susan and her family. One day, when Susan's son Niko (who was 7 at the time) was eating alphabet soup, he wondered what would happen if they fed the soup to Martha. Would she talk? This was the seed for the first Martha Speaks book. Since then five more pictures book about Martha have been published. A PBS television show debuted in September 2008 with much fanfare and many great reviews.
