Ludwig makes his children's book debut with this wittily illustrated but slight retelling of an Arkansas folktale about a lost traveler who discovers a secret about hibernating bears. After watching the sunrise, Granny and her soulful hound Henry escape from a snowstorm into a cave where the wise lady calms a restlessly sleeping bear as if he were a toddler by putting his paw back in his mouth. Although the book has certain weaknesses--an insubstantial plot, forced dialect and a lack of characterizing detail--Ludwig's humorous illustrations of plump Granny Rose and her obliging dog are nonetheless engaging. Ages 4-8. (Apr.)

PreS-Gr 2-- Granny Rose and her dog Henry get caught in a sudden blizzard while walking in the hills. Fortunately, Henry finds a cave where they take shelter. Unfortunately, Granny finds a bear hibernating in it. The restless bear's tossing and turning gets to Granny Rose. She shoves the ``poor fella's'' huge paw into its mouth and soon ``he's sleepin' like a baby.'' When the snowstorm abates, Granny Rose and Henry make their way back home for breakfast. This slight, humorous story is billed as a traditional Arkansas folktale; however, no source is cited. Readers will be charmed by the feisty Rose, with her single tooth and granny glasses, as well as by the wonderfully expressive Henry. The tenderness of their relationship makes Granny Rose's concern for the bear all the more believable, expressed in Ludwig's winsome watercolors. His illustrations capture the beauty of the Ozarks as well as the humor of the story, making this promising debut a good read-aloud choice. --Lori A. Janick, Parkwood Elementary School, Pasadena, TX
