Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Fairy Friends Bedtime turns magical in Good Night, Fairies by Kathleen Hague, illus. by Michael Hague, as a mother answers her child's questions about what fairies do at nighttime. The parent characterizes them as benevolent, magical creatures that watch over children and care for their lost toys. Michael Hague's signature intricate pen-and-ink, watercolor and colored pencil illustrations reveal an enchanting miniature world. (Apr.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
Lavish endpapers peopled with fairies and other magical creatures cavorting under a benevolent moon draw readers into the latest collaboration by this husband and wife team. Told in an old-fashioned tone, the bedtime book begins in a Victorian nursery with a child asking his mother about fairies. As his mother relates the fairies various duties, readers follow a red-capped fairy as he and his companions hang stars and comb mermaids' hair. While young children will be fascinated by the secret world of fairies, the text seems like a hook for Hague's rich watercolor, pencil, and ink illustrations. Heavily influenced by Rackham and W. Heath Robinson, Hague is at his best painting animals and imaginary beings, but humans, such as the mother and child, are rendered awkwardly. His palette of blues and blushes and greens is so lush, one can practically taste the colors, and the double spread of fairies teaching baby birds to sing is a visual symphony. Children will enjoy counting 321 fairies in fantastic settings and being sent off to the Land of Nod with enchanted visions flitting in their head. 2002, SeaStar Books,

    This artwork is divine!

My son brought this home from school for me because I adore fairies! The story is beautifully told and is simple for any child to understand, but what will keep parent and child interested is the vivid artwork! Simply amazing! Get this book! You won't regret it!!!

    My daughter's preferred bedtime story!

A really nice bedtime story. I like how it ends with the idea that the fairies are waiting to take your child to dreamland. We put up a garland with easter lights in it and she calls them her fairy lights - they must be on when reading the book. Then it is followed by a Celtic Lullabyes CD for "fairy music". This book really has touched my daughter - she loves the illustrations and always looks to find something new on the page.
