Children's Literature
The popular books from Hans de Beer are now the jumping off point for a series of "Little Polar Bear" board books. The material presented is hardly fresh. Lars is having trouble going to sleep. He needs to kiss his mother, he wants a drink, and then he is upset when he hears a strange noise. His parents offer comfort and when father bear says that he will stay for a while, little Lars finally falls asleep. My biggest quibble with these books is that polar bears do not live as a family unit. It is the mother who raises her cub with the father playing no role in his offspring's upbringing. 2003, Sterling, Ages 6 mo. to 2.—Marilyn Courtot
