Overview

A non-sleeping child can be a parent's worst nightmare. No one knows that more than Kim West, who has worked one-on-one with thousands of people in more than 10 years of private practice. Her amazing success with getting kids to sleep-honed by Kim's own experience as a mother of a "fussy" baby-has led her clients to dub her The Sleep Lady. Now she brings her accessible, innovative program to frazzled parents everywhere.

Good Night, Sleep Tight outlines Kim's proven two-week technique in clear, easy-to-follow language, featuring anecdotal case studies that give readers real-life examples of the sleep-roadblocks children often encounter-and the tools to overcome them. The Sleep Lady system is not a leave him alone, let him cry method-nor does it advocate coddling her on demand. Instead, GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT gives parents of sleepless children-from newborns to toddlers and beyond-a practical, step-by-step framework to reduce stress, ease those tears, and provide their kids with the necessary skills to break through the barriers to slumber and ensure a full, restful night.

With her characteristic warmth, wisdom and understanding, the Sleep Lady will help you:

  • create and stick to a sleep schedule that works
  • blend napping into your child's daily routine without sacrificing a full night's sleep
  • find the right balance between feeding and sleeping
  • establish a sleep-friendly environment
  • make bedtime the best time of the day!

    Great sleep schedule guide

This book helped me tremendously. My daughter had severe reflux that kept her from sleeping on her back for the first few months of her life. We had to transition her not only into a good schedule but also into her crib. I read other books, but I thought that this book gave me the most accurate guidelines for what my baby needed. Even after we got her sleeping through the night, I continued to used this book for reference at the changing stages of sleep. For my child it was a great reference for nap schedules, helping her get to sleep on her own, moving from 2 naps to 1 nap, and dealing with setbacks. The 'sleep lady shuffle' did not work perfectly for us... but again, I took the suggestions and modified them to best match my child's needs. The most beneficial part of the book for us was the recommended bedtimes & naptimes and recommended amount of sleep needed broken out by age. It was almost comical how accurately the book could predict my daughter's sleep needs - and she became such a happier child once she became well rested. I am putting a copy in the mail to my best friend with a new baby today!

    Good mix of sleep strategies

I first read Babywise, which a friend had given me. We started on a flexible schedule with feedings about every three hours. This was very helpful and a good start, but after reading some negative things about the book, I wanted to read some others. There are so many different theories on sleeping and feeding! I found Good Night, Sleep Tight and really liked it because it seemed to be a good mix of the different theories. There are a few main components that almost every sleep book I've read recommends, including having a bedtime routine, putting the baby down drowsy but awake, and creating a sleep friendly environment. This book begins with those basic components and gives you additional information and resources. I like that it gives some guidance as to what a typical schedule might be like, what you might expect, etc. It's also nice to see that what you're experiencing is very normal and that there are things you can do about it. My son started sleeping through the night at about 3 months. Naps are still a little difficult to settle him down for and I just pulled the book out again to get some advice on making naps a little easier. There is a whole section of suggestions. I don¿t think this is a cry it out book. She creates a middle ground between letting your baby cry and responding immediately. Although we didn¿t need to do the ¿Sleep Lady Shuffle¿ she suggests, so I can¿t comment on that. You will drive yourself crazy trying to find the ¿right¿ way to do things. Read what you can and do what feels right.

    An OK book about sleep

If your baby is calm and even tempered this book could work for you. It assumes that babies are easy and will respond in the expected way. Most babies with sleep issues, like mine, require more information and a more specific set of ideas to improve sleep. Also if you breastfeed or have a family bed this probably isn't the best book for you as the author clearly doesn't understand these issues. Aimed at younger babies so if you have an older baby or toddler you may not find your answers. Also if you have the 20 page booklet by West this is just an expanded version of the same.

    Best Sleep Book Ever

I didn't believe it until we tried it. I have a fifteen month old who used to nurse herself to sleep. She would only take a twenty minute nap during the day. It's taken only two days and my child is putting herself to sleep and sleeping six hours at a stretch. She woke only once last night. Today she took a two hour nap, again, putting herself to sleep. It is much less traumatic for both parent and baby, following the Sleep Lady method, than using more traditional cry-it-out methods. This book has saved my sanity!
