Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Sometimes kids have a hard time understanding why they need to go to sleep. They often feel that they are missing out on something interesting because the adults or older siblings in their lives are not going to sleep, too. The Sesame Street characters help children understand that everyone needs sleep; and sleep is important because it gives your body time to reenergize for the next day. The importance of a regular bedtime and a regular bedtime routine can help kids and anyone get to sleep easily. For many it is taking a bath, brushing teeth, having a story read to them. Some kids like to relate the day's activities and what they have planed for the next day. It may be difficult to get to sleep if there are distractions such as light and noise. Once asleep we tend to dream, but often we do not remember what we dreamed. The next to last spread contains a note to parents about the importance of sleep and what they can do to help their kids settle down for the night. The next one discusses how to stay healthy, which includes a combination of sleep and rest, nutritious food, and an opportunity for play.
Children's Literature - Carol Kirkham Martin
This title in the "Happy Healthy Monster" series invites children to join the familiar Sesame Street character Elmo as his mommy lulls him to sleep with a bedtime story. In his dreams Elmo meets the Sleepytime Monster and together they visit friends to help them fall asleep. Throughout, Sleepytime Monster shares expert bedtime advice. He gives tips for falling asleep—like keeping a regular bedtime, removing distractions, sticking to a routine, listening to a bedtime story, getting a hug, hearing a song, and/or talking with someone about the day. Sleepytime Monster works so hard even he falls asleep. The familiar situation and Sesame Street characters work well to engage young readers. A follow-up note to parents relates similar bedtime tips, along with suggestions for providing children with exercise and a nutritious diet. A recipe card for applesauce is included in the binding. The primary colors used in illustrations, the action packed story line, and the cartoon characters are successful signature elements of Sesame Street books. The health curriculum for many preschool and primary grade students includes good sleep habits. Parents are anxiously searching for help with this age-old issue, making this a worthwhile resource for schools and libraries.
