Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Bagg
"Flying Kites in the Park," "Visiting the Museum," "Listening to the Rumble of the Subway,"and "Losing a Tooth" are all part of this pleasant collection of poems showing the city from a child's perspective. The colorful multi-ethnic illustrations have lots to enjoy. Hopkins has a true understanding of a child's world and his spare poems capture a moment and are reminiscent of haiku.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 4Here, prolific anthologist Hopkins has gathered 21 of his own lighthearted poems, many of which have been published elsewhere, into an engaging collection that captures the wonder and exuberance of childhood. The simple verses express childlike sentiments on a variety of subjects, from pets to favorite pastimes, from the awesomeness of thunderstorms to the quiet magic of the seasons. Lessac's vibrant, primitive paintings, many of which depict urban life, are equally childlike and enormously appealing. Attractive design with spacious layout on large pages guarantees a wide audience. The title says it allGood Rhymes, Good Times.Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

Sing a Song of Cities

Sing a song of cities.
If you do,
Cities will sing back to you.

They'll sing in subway roars and rumbles.
People-laughs, machine-loud-grumbles.

Sing a song of cities.
If you do,
Cities will sing back to you.
