Overview

In her New York Times bestsellers Going Rogue and America by Heart, Sarah Palin revealed the strong Christian faith that has guided her life and family. In A Happy Holiday IS a Merry Christmas, she calls for bringing back the freedom to express the Christian values of the season. She asserts the importance of preserving Jesus Christ in Christmas-in public displays, school concerts, pageants, and our expressions to one another other-and laments the over-commercialization and homogenization of Christmas in today's society. Interwoven throughout are personal memories and family traditions, as well as more than a dozen family photos, which illustrate the reasons why the celebration of Jesus Christ's nativity is the centerpiece of her faith.Palin believes it is imperative that we stand up for our beliefs before the element of faith in a glorious and traditional holiday like Christmas is marginalized and ignored. She also encourages readers to see what is possible when we unite in defense of our religious convictions and ignore the politically correct Scrooges seeking to take Christ out of Christmas. A Happy Holiday IS a Merry Christmas is a call to action to openly celebrate the joys of Christianity, and say Merry Christmas to one another.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Sarah Palin's new book adapts its title from the angelic words recorded in Luke 2 that promise "good tidings that will cause great joy." In this holiday hardcover, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate argues that we Americans should reassert that Christian faith in public events, school concerts, civic pageants, and official gatherings. She also offers spirited criticism of the over-commercialization and watering-down homogenization of Christmas in our national culture. A call to conservative Christian action.

Kirkus Reviews
2013-12-04
The former Alaska governor searches for the culprit leeching the joy out of Christian Christmas. Palin (America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag, 2010, etc.) calls foul on the incremental disintegration of the Yuletide season by those who seek to reinvent the holiday by removing the religious element and replacing it with what she calls a "secular winter festival, which launches on Black Friday and ends sometime after Kwanzaa." The outspoken conservative points the finger at American atheists offended by religious crosses and the presentation of Nativity scenes, the latter of which she proudly advocated for in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska. Palin's ruffled feathers are due in large part to the corporatization of Christmas, particularly the attempts of big-box retailers to strip the holiday of its holy name and heavily religious connotations. As she dissects these injustices, Palin offers scenarios and examples in hopes that readers will make their own decisions about what to do when confronted with these same issues. The author also shares seasonal anecdotes and family photographs of her life in Alaska during the holiday season--e.g., playing Christmas morning Eskimo Bingo, "a gift-swapping game and the only time we enthusiastically encourage the kids to be greedy." Of course, this is Palin's turf, so these nostalgic, family-friendly memories are often accompanied by the obligatory backhanded jab, as when she describes gifting husband Todd with a powerful new firearm one year "to combat the anti-gun chatter coming from Washington." The author tritely dismisses the media altogether and shows great dismay toward a nation increasingly rethinking its religious allegiances. At the very least, Palin is very occasionally entertaining as she displays her conservative convictions across the diminutive pages of this stylishly produced book, which concludes with a chapter of traditional family sweet and savory recipes. A stocking stuffer for Palin fans.

Consistently well thought out manipulations, compounded with fear mongering and outright untruths. "An angry atheist with a lawyer is one of the most powerful persons in America." ~ from this book. Americans are not being told who to pray to, where they can pray, or how. The problem with the premise of this book is that it seems to claim the religious rights of Christians are under assault, but pays no attention to the fact that other religions exist in America, and they are protected from intrusion upon their beliefs as well. Public displays of religion using public funding are not allowed from any religion or sect, not just Christians. "Walgreens’ 24-page nationwide circular used the word holiday 36 times without one mention of Christmas." ~ from this book. If the followers of Sarah Palin want Walgreen's to use the word "Christmas", follow their mantra, use your wallet vote. Persecution of others may be as simple as erecting any religious edifice on public ground, but on private property it is not and cannot be legislated against. This book confuses the issue of public and private so much that the only logical conclusion is that the Author wants her readers to believe that America is a Christian nation in formation, something the framers of the Constitution were vocal against. "To the corruptions of Christianity I am indeed opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself." -Thomas Jefferson, 1803 Recommended related reading: "The Jefferson Bible" by Thomas Jefferson.

I do not see any value in this book. People speaking of the commercialization of Christmas has been with us for decades. There is no war on Christmas! While others are being told that there is, the rest of us will be decorating our trees and baking.

This book should not be tossed aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force. While Palin rants about her war on Christmas and not being able to understand that greetings extend to people from all walks of life. I find it offensive that she speaks of the commercialization of Christmas but yet is cashing in on a book. This is all hypocrisy!

Wonderful Book, written by a wonderful lady. Its so time that a person (women) of her class and integrity share her thoughts of how this world is. A lovely Christian women indeed.
The Christmas season needs to be about the nativity, the birth of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior. People need to stop with all the shopping, gift giving and partying. Bring back family togetherness and respect of others as well as our own self. Sarah Palin stands for that, truth in the Christ Jesus. When you see drag (men dressed as women) in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade that just disgusted me. People wake up or you will see the pits of hell. Find true meaning for Christmas. Repent and get right with God.She's not prejudice she's speaks the truth and those of you that she offends and the guilty.

pure rubbish and I wouldn't expect anything other than that from Mrs. Palin. Then again, given the fact that she is incapable of stringing together a coherent sentence, I highly doubt she even wrote this book or the last 2 for that matter. Phoney war on Christmas is all in her head but way to cash in, Sarah! just in time! - very savvy.
