Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Nancy Tafuri brings back the stars of Have You Seen My Duckling? for a bedtime tale in Goodnight, My Duckling. As the ducklings follow their mother home to bed, one bids goodnight to all the other pond inhabitants and loses track of its family; luckily a turtle offers to act as ferry for the little fowl. Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Mother duck calls to her little ones, "Time for bed, my ducklings!" The last one is distracted by the animals and insects nearby, some of whom say goodnight, such as the beaver and the frog. Dawdling has left the little one behind and soon the duckling feels lost. A friendly turtle carries the duckling home to mama. There is just enough tension for the toddler set, and the happy, soothing ending is just the thing at bedtime. Tafuri provides clues in the background and uses minimal language that allow parents to point out and name the various animals pictured on the pages. As well as a bedtime story, this is a good introduction to lake and river wildlife. This is a companion book to Have You Seen My Duckling? and was previously available as a picture book. The sturdy board book format means that small children can easily turn the pages without damaging the book.
School Library Journal
PreS-Fans of Tafuri's Have You Seen My Duckling? (HarperCollins, 1984) will welcome this companion story. As the light begins to fade over the pond, Mama Duck announces to her eight ducklings that it is time for bed. She and seven of her charges start toward home but one straggler is distracted by the other animals that bid him good night. He soon discovers that he is the only duckling left on the pond. A turtle who has been watching the scene unfold comes to his rescue and safely carries him home. Sharp-eyed youngsters will spot the turtle on each page and will be reassured to see that Mama Duck is never entirely out of sight. The finely detailed, realistic illustrations are rich in color and depth; the spread showing the diminutive duck seemingly all alone on the very large pond is particularly effective. Perfect for evening storytimes and one-on-one readings before bedtime for the youngest listeners.-Wendy Woodfill, Hennepin County Library, Minnetonka, MN Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Old fans and new listeners will be happy to welcome Tafuri's Mama Duck and her eight adorable babies in a brand-new appearance. Not much has changed in the pastoral world in which they live. Tafuri's illustrations are still crisp and clean, and the minimal text is perfectly suited to the low-key action. As Mama and family swim homeward to go to sleep, one duckling lags behind. A beaver, a frog, and various other animals offer good wishes ("Sleep tight, little duckling") and advice ("Hurry home, little duckling"), while a turtle keeps an eye on the duckling's progress. When Mama Duck disappears from the duckling's view (but not from sharp-eyed readers), the turtle wades in to lend a hand, ensuring a happy ending. As the story unfolds, the background fades from evening to night, with first blue skies, then a softly colored sunset, then a large, luminous moon. Quiet, lovely, and soothing, this is a worthy companion to Tafuri's Have You Seen My Duckling? (1984) (Picture book. 2-4)
