Roberts shows us Google's response to the rise of Facebook. While this is meant as a 'first look', in practice much of the descriptions show a well crafted product. Existing Facebook users might see much that is functionally familiar and that is no surprise. Facebook is mentioned many times in the narrative. No coy shying away from it. Many of the mentions make explicit the similarities. Roberts is taking no chances in having the mindshare transition be as smooth as possible. But differences are also detailed. Roughly, these can be summarised through the vantage that Google has taken the tack of giving the user more control, more fine tuned options. It really seems to be trying to be more user friendly. Whether enough users avail themselves of these extra choices is uncertain at this point. Twitter and how it can be incorporated into your use of Google+ is also covered. Vital as a pragmatic acknowledgment by Google that its product is coming relatively late into the social networking realm, and that it needs to accomodate those already heavily using Twitter.
