The way the goose resolves the dilemma shows how conflicts can be solved creatively.

"The goose was struggling to get away, but the more he fought, the worse it got. His feet and wings were wrapped tight in the lines, and the hooks were caught in his feathers. The float was hanging from his neck, and if it hadn't been so serious, Jerry would have laughed out loud." — from the book

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Based on a true story, it is not hard to figure that the author is writing from personal experience. (Hay lives on the Wabash River in Indiana and is an official "riverlorian.") Gilligan is a goose who gets caught in a trotline and is rescued. "In case you're wondering," the author interjects, "a trotline is a number of fishing lines and hooks tied to a main cord and float and then anchored." Gilligan returns to his rescuer's home for a visit, meets the neighbors, and greets the family cat. Eventually, Gilligan flies south for the winter, but one spring morning his human friends are happy to hear the familiar, "Honk, honk." Gilligan the goose has returned to his favorite spot along the river. A quiet little story with illustrations that depict the unique friendship of a man and a goose. 2004, H.J. Kramer/Starseed Press, Ages 4 to 8.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Jerry lives in a cabin on the bank of the Wabash in Indiana. He loves the river and the animals that live there. One day, when he is out in his boat, he comes across a goose that is tangled in a trotline. When he saves its life, he makes a lifelong friend. The text does a nice job of describing the developing relationship between the man and the goose. Pollema-Cahill's realistic watercolor illustrations beautifully depict the river and the animals. Hay emphasizes the importance of environmental responsibility and respect for the freedom of wild creatures. A somewhat slow-moving but thoughtful book for nature lovers.-Kelley Rae Unger, Peabody Institute, MA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
