Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Enid Portnoy
Right in time for Halloween comes Goosebumps’ “Most Wanted Special Edition” series. Goosebumps are undoubtedly one of the most popular mystery series for children. and this first Special Edition tale is designed to raise the hair right off the neck of a young reader, plus offer explanations of how what looks scary may be not quite as scary as it seem—most of the time! Kenny is a kid in town whose family has just moved to town to care for Grandpa Mo. Kenny observes strange sights around town—and even next door. Halloween should be a fun time so Kenny plans to have a party and invite new friends; but that may not be such a great idea. Neighborhood gossip about secrets and ghostly figures seen in a graveyard across the street may cause Kenny to give up his party plans. Readers will visualize Kenny and his sister exploring the graveyard at night! Are there really empty graves there, plus sightings of bony hands, strange floating bodies and hauntings in Kenny’s new house, with trap doors and dark tunnels? Leave it to R.L.Stine to raise shivers as a Halloween costume party turns into a growling, spooky mess. Stine’s books are known world-wide. He also has a web site and has written a large collection of Goosebumps series books from which young readers may choose. A preview of a new Christmas mystery appears in the back of this book as a Special Edition, just as this Zombie book is. Celebrate Halloween with the book or share it as a Holiday Treat or party favor for some young person who likes a little fright with a good story. Chapters are short (all forty-four of them) but no more pages are needed to exercise the eager imagination of readers around Halloween. Reviewer: Enid Portnoy; Ages 9 to 12.

I received this book via NetGalley to give an honest review. I grew up reading R.L. Stine and I think the last Goosebumps book I picked up was when I was probably 13 or 14 years old. So when I saw this book was up for review I had to get my hands on it. I love R.L. Stine's writing. He has a way to lure you into the spooky story and have you wondering what are these kids going to do now. With Zombie Halloween we start off back in the 1940's I believe and a old house with a cliff hanger. Then fast forward to the present. Kenny and his family live in this old house. Now I did not connect two and two until later on the story!! It was like what? Kenny of course starts this amazing, funny zombie patrol as him and his friend are really stuck on zombies.  When his sister wants to throw a Halloween party Kenny gets this idea of throwing a zombie party, but happens when the real zombies come out?  Then a new kid ends up moving next to Kenny and his family and that starts a whole thing of could they be zombies? Kenny of course has to investigate I mean you just have to.  Grandpa Mo has a bit of a secret himself which you just have to read to find out.  Not only that the ending has you gonna SAY WHAT!  R.L. Stine has done it again with this amazing story telling. The only problem I had with this book is that I do not own in paperback.

A fun scary YA read with loads of surprising twists and turns! There wouldn't be so many stories about vampires and zombies and other weird creatures if they didn't really exist. ZOMBIE HALLOWEEN by R. L. Stine is an intense, highly entertaining horror thriller with a young target audience. I confess to being nowhere near the author's intended audience. I really enjoyed ZOMBIE HALLOWEEN. Who would have thought that a YA book would keep me on the edge of my seat through-out? R.L. Stine is a new author to me. My son and I recently saw the Goosebumps movie and we both loved it. It inspired me to check out the books as I wanted to delve into the background of the human and fantasy characters in the movie. I'm very glad we saw the movie because, as a result, I've discovered a new favorite author. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a scary read and R.L. Stine has plenty offerings to choose from! This three-part story is set in two time periods: 1944 (Part 1) and present day (Parts 2 and 3). The two time periods are linked by a familial connection and a common setting within the same home across from a spooky graveyard in a small town. The story in 1944 features Mario, his younger brother, Anthony, and his friend, Ivy. Kenney is our present day hero. I've definitely been zapped with the R.L. Stine bug. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this YA book and have vowed that it won't be the last R.L. Stine book for me! I've already got another on my nightstand and I picked up a Goosebumps audiobook too! Warning: Each chapter features a cliffhanger ending including the last chapter!!!!! AAGH! Just know that if you read ZOMBIE HALLOWEEN, you'll have to read the sequel - which is not a bad thing. Overflowing with heart-stopping suspense, I highly recommend ZOMBIE HALLOWEEN to anyone of any age who enjoys a fun scary read with loads of surprising twists and turns! Boo to you!
