Gorgonzola: A Very Stinkysaurus (LIBRARY EDITION)

Overview

Long, long ago, when dinosaurs ruled the land, there lived a dino who was the worst of them all: Gorgonzola.

Not really large, not really scary, Gorgonzola was known near and far for his . . . D.O. Yes, dinosaur odor. From horn to toe, Gorgonzola was one serious stinker. That is, until a bold little birdie decides it’s high time to show this soap-challenged big boy just how to clean up his act.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Whoever knew a dinosaur would need good hygiene? Maybe not a lot of human readers did, but this book with a good lesson to be learned spells it out nicely. The featured character, Gorgonzola, blows away anyone near him with one horrific odor. After all, he has never had a bath or known about good hygiene since he was an orphaned egg. Luckily, a kind hearted bird tells him how badly he stinks and teaches him the proper way to brush his teeth and to bathe. He is given instructions to wash everything, including areas behind the ears, around the neck, and even around the tail. When he is finished and learns to do this everyday, he gains friends and has fun with everyone. A nice twist by the author comes at the book's end when she tells that Gorgonzola is the first dinosaur to be "ex-stink." This book is a must for teaching children about the necessity to maintain good hygiene. The humorous text and playfully funny illustrations are sure to make this a winner with young readers, and they will probably be quite willing to brush and bathe like Gorgonzola. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2- Palatini and Bowers have a winner in this hilarious story about an awkward subject. Gorgonzola the dinosaur isn't mean, he isn't scary, and he isn't fierce. But boy does he stink! He smells so "doggone awful" that no one can stand to be around him. The poor guy doesn't even realize his offense until a plucky bird finally tells him, "You could petrify a rock with that prehistoric aroma of yours." He was an orphaned egg and had to hatch himself; he never had a mother to tell him about soap, toothbrushes, or blowing his nose. Birdie decides to help and soon has her new friend spiffed up and ready to join the rest of civilization, "proud to be the first dinosaur declared 'ex-stink.'" The over-the-top illustrations of the grossed-out dinosaurs running in alarm from the steaming Gorgonzola will bring belly laughs to children and inspiration to the grown-ups who have to wrestle them into the bathtub or dentist's chair. Witty dialogue and an effective layout get the personal hygiene message across without being preachy or didactic. Gorgonzola has loads of child appeal and will be enjoyed for its humor and charm.-Kara Schaff Dean, Walpole Public Library, MA

Kirkus Reviews
A huge dinosaur with equally huge D.O. gets a personal hygiene makeover, thanks to coaching from an irritated avian victim. Cast as a massive blue-green triceratops with ropy strands of slime dripping from mouth and nose, Gorgonzola looks more puppylike than fearsome, but all flee at his approach nonetheless. A bird mom finally tells him why ("You're a Primo Stinko!"), then takes him step by step through a vigorous brushing of teeth, a gargle with mouthwash, a soapy bath-"Woah! WOAH! Don't just splash. You gotta scrub, boy! Scrub!"-and an exuberant powdering. "I feel like a real humane being," he crows. "How often do I have to do this?" Bowers hangs a whistle around Birdie's neck and tucks other visual jokes into his scratchy prehistoric scenes. Redolent with high-spirited humor and capped by a magnificent pun, this should make persuasive reading for any young monster who heads the other way when bath time rolls around. (Picture book. 5-8)

    Gorgonzola gets Giggles...

My three-and-a-half-year daughter loves this book. I wasn't sure at first when I read through it. Gorgonzola didn't have a mommy so he doesn't know anything about hygiene. His poor hygiene has left him without any friends. This book is light-hearted way to start conversations about why good hygiene and brushing your teeth are so important. My daughter asks to reread this and she loves saying "Gor-gon-ZOL-a." We do a silly, dunce-like voice for Gorgonzola and a sort of sassy, authoritative tone for the bird. She loves the silly text about getting the cheese from between his toes. It also introduces words like eon and mesozoic!
