Roll over, Josie and the Pussycats, and tell the Archies the news: There is a new cartoon band in town, the poppy, trippy, hip-hoppy Gorillaz. But cosmonaut vixens or pie-faced high school kids the Gorillaz are not; instead, they're an urban-chic troupe of misfits known as Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D. For more on their story, go to gorillaz.com. As for the music, well, the people who actually created Gorillaz sorry to spoil the fantasy include avant-garde hip-hop producer extraordinaire Dan the Automator Dr. Octagon, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Deltron 3030, Blur vocalist Damon Albarn, Cibo Matto singer Miho Hatori, rapper Del the Funky Homosapien, and former Talking Heads/current Tom Tom Club members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz. The album is a tasty brew of the many musical stylings purveyed by its creators. The single, "Clint Eastwood," combines the Automator's toe-tappin' beats with Albarn's chipper, oh-so-British vocals "I'm feeling glad/I've got sunshine in a bag", and Del's tough-guy raps "Chicks and dudes/Who you think is really kicking tunes?". Other standouts include the aptly titled, minute-and-a-half Albarn screamfest "Punk"; Del's Grandmaster Flash-style rap "Rock the House" featuring the call-to-action "I want y'all to just get down"; the groovy indie rock of "Re-Hash," featuring Hatori's sweet backing vocals; and the ominous Pink Floyd-esque art-rock of "M1 A1," which features a sample from the horror flick Day of the Dead. Yep, this album is all over the place, but the Automator's production skills and seamless segues hold it all together. Action figures sold separately.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
It's tempting to judge Gorillaz -- Damon Albarn, Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett, and Dan "The Automator" Nakamura's virtual band -- just by their brilliantly animated videos and write the project off as another triumph of style over substance. Admittedly, Hewlett's edgy-cute characterizations of 2-D, Gorillaz' pretty boy singer who looks a cross between the Charlatans' Tim Burgess and Sonic the Hedgehog, sinister bassist Murdoc, whiz-kid guitarist Noodle, and b-boy drummer Russel are so arresting that they almost detract from Gorillaz' music. The amazing "Thriller"-meets-Planet of the Apes clip for "Clint Eastwood" is so visually clever that it's easy to take the song's equally clever, hip-hop-tinged update of the Specials' "Ghost Town" for granted. And initially, Gorillaz' self-titled debut feels incomplete when Hewlett's imagery is removed; the concept of Gorillaz as a virtual band doesn't hold up as well when you can't see the virtual bandmembers. It's too bad that there isn't a DVD version of Gorillaz, with videos for every song, à la the DVD version of Super Furry Animals' Rings Around the World. Musically, however, Gorillaz is a cutely caricatured blend of Albarn's eclectic Brit-pop and Nakamura's equally wide-ranging hip-hop, and it sounds almost as good as the band looks. Albarn has fun sending up Blur's cheeky pop on songs like "5/4" and "Re-Hash," their trip-hop experiments on "New Genious" and "Sound Check," and "Song 2"-like thrash-pop on "Punk" and "M1 A1." Despite the similarities between Albarn's main gig and his contributions here, Gorillaz isn't an Albarn solo album in disguise; Nakamura's bass- and beat-oriented production gives the album an authentically dub and hip-hop-inspired feel, particularly on "Rock the House" and "Tomorrow Comes Today." Likewise, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Miho Hatori, and Ibrahim Ferrer's vocals ensure that it sounds like a diverse collaboration rather than an insular side project. Instead, it feels like a musical vacation for all parties involved -- a little self-indulgent, but filled with enough fun ideas and good songs to make this virtual band's debut a genuinely enjoyable album.

[three stars] Gorillaz is kind of a soundtrack CD to the jaw-dropping animation Web site gorillaz.com, but it stands alone as a playful piece of genre-squishing art pop.

    Pretty Good.

This album is quite diverse in its variation of styles and genres. A lot of different people could listen to this album and find something that they like. Standout tracks for me are; "Tomorrow Comes Today," "Clint Eastwood," "19-2000," and "Left Hand Suzuki Method."

    A Cool, Hip, Fun Album!

Gorillaz are fast starting to become one of my favorite secular artists. This is the 2nd of 2 of their cds I bought recently...this and Demon Days...and I am enthralled with these albums by how original & neat they sound. They mix most any genre of music you can think of at various times throughout the album, with the exception of maybe metal and hardcore...and they make it work! After having listened through this and Demon Days, I am pretty confident now that I am going to be heading down to the store tomorrow and picking up Plastic Beach as well. Folks, if you like multiple genres of music like I do, or even just hiphop/funk/soul...check out this album! It's refreshing and original!

    of course

ok so this album might not be your typical rock/whatever cd, but despite what you might think it actually is really good. It is totally unique which makes it one of my favorites. It doesn't matter what style of music you listen to it caters to almost ever one, rap, funk, rock, latin...WHATEVER!

    Ooh... so good

I love this CD. I cant help but play it every day and its been out for awhile. The variety is amazing, and the songs are the perfect tunes to just listen to for hours. Clint Eastwood - even though it has nothing to do with the star far as i can see - is the best song ever and the video is so great! Good stuff, buy this... now!

    Nothing like it

I was watching mtv and i saw the video. It was AMAZING! I was fascinated with Murdoc, arrested by 2-d's blank stare, blown away by russel&Del's percussion & rhymes& Noodle plays the guitar better than anyone else at the age of 10! I had to have more, to see more! It's an excellent combination of EVERYTHING! Reggae, rap, alternative, rock, with a twist of pop. It's the only thing I listen to ever.

This album is simply a must-have.

This album is incredibly artistic and musically overpowering. I will never know how they managed to write so many songs that are all 110% enjoyable. Each song has a great beat that makes you bob your head and singing or rapping that is flawless. I love how they blend in the hip hop, techno, rock, etc...sometimes all in one song. I love it! For the last week I have taken this CD and this CD only with me everywhere and it fulfills ALL my musical needs.

    Grows on you

I first heard ''Clint Eastwood'' on the radio. My initial reaction: ''Now THIS is disturbing!'' I decided that it stank and I wrote it off immediately. But I suddenly realized I was humming it to myself 24-7. I tried to stop but I couldn't. IT WAS TOTALLY TORTURING ME!!! Finally, I came to this very website and listened to it again. It was then that I realized how wrong I was. THIS WAS AN AWESOME SONG!!! I immediately went to the nearest music store and purchased the album. I then realized that not just was ''Clint Eastwood'' awesome, but the entire CD was! Most of the lyrics are unintelligable, but the music will burrow its way into your brain and it'll never get out. But thats okay because the music is great. Better that than some Wayne Newton deal.

    gorillaz- they aren't monkey-ing around

This is a surprising entry to the music world. It combines most of the modern day music genres. It is a must-have for parties, and is so much better than a mix CD! The track ''Clint Eastwood'' has some pop elements, but also has an edge that is expected from rap or alternative music. When I saw the music video for it, I knew I had to get the CD!!

Gorillaz is an unusual find indeed...

A little over a month ago, I did something I hadn't done in almost 2 years.. I purchased an English-language CD. Yep, it was the Gorillaz album. Being a rabid fan of Japanese rock, I never listen to English radio or watch MTV.. but after catching a glimpse of the ''Clint Eastwood'' video back in June, I was hooked. For once ignoring my dislike towards rap, I was drawn to 2D/Damon Albarn's smooth vocals, the variety of musical genres presented on the album, and, of course [being an artist myself], the 4 characters that make up the Gorillaz. There's a little something for everyone on this CD, from rock to rap to reggae to punk, and I highly recommend it.
