Gospel Brunch Classics

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
The Rounder label may not be the first one that comes to mind when you think of gospel music, but this fine midpriced collection could help to change that. The Holmes Brothers bring a Harlem sound to the funkily jubilant "Praise His Name" and a very fine setting of the classic "Walk in the Light," while Irma Thomas brings a New Orleans blues sensibility to bear on her performance of "Careful Hands" and the Birmingham Sunlights ...

The Holmes Brothers bring a Harlem sound to the funkily jubilant "Praise His Name" and a very fine setting of the classic "Walk in the Light," while Irma Thomas brings a New Orleans blues sensibility to bear on her performance of "Careful Hands" and the Birmingham Sunlights deliver "Today" and "Gospel Train" in a traditional a cappella style. The famous Dixie Hummingbirds are here with a rocking rendition of "I've Been Born Again," and there's even a surprise appearance by Aaron Neville, whose particular brand of spiritual singing is usually explicitly Roman Catholic in orientation, but who collaborates here with R&B great Johnny Adams on an arrangement of "Never Alone." All in all, this album offers a varied and highly satisfying menu of gospel treats.
