Got Fangs?

Overview

I used to think all I wanted was to have a normal life. You know, where I could be one of the crowd and blend in, so no one would know just how different I am. But now I'm stuck in the middle of Hungary with my mom, working for a traveling fair with my psychics, magicians, and other really weird people, and somehow, blending in with this crowd doesn't look so good.

Fortunately, there's Benedikt. Yeah, he may be a vampire, but he has a motorcycle, he likes the mysterious horse I...

    delightful young adult fantasy

Oregonian teenager Francesca only wants to be normal, but that is difficult when you are six feet tall, bigger than most males in the school, and can read minds by touching objects. Making it more difficult to be a norm is her recently divorced mother, a witch who has dragged Fran to Hungary on a traveling show tour filled with freaks and geeks.--- Fran is almost run over by a motorcycle. The driver is a hunk who is actually taller than her, which is what freaks her out. She does not blink when she learns he is Benedikt Czerny, a Czech Moravian Dark One over three centuries old. As she suffers from a crush over the geriatric vampire who does not look a day over his early twenties, he believes she is the one who will save his soul. Of course when it comes to battling a demon, Benedikt thinks Fran and his sister should stay home while he fights alone; he obviously does not understand an American Amazonian princess who is prepared to kick demon butt and his if necessary between their kisses.--- The cast whether they are normals, supernatural, or hybrid in-betweeners seem genuine so that the audience receives a delightful young adult fantasy. The story line grips the audience from the moment a lamenting Fran, the poster girl for teen angst, meets Benedikt, the centerfold of vampires; and never slows down until the final altercation with the demon that will open the Moravian¿s eyes (not his fangs). Fans will appreciate this fine amusing yet suspenseful tale of vampires, witches, and demons, oh my.--- Harriet Klausner

Reviewed by Jennifer Wardrip, aka "The Genius" for TeensReadToo.com

Francesca (Fran) is currently touring Germany with a Goth Faire, courtesy of her mother, who is a witch. After her father had what she kindly refers to as a midlife crisis, Fran was sent to stay with her mom--who is finally living her dream, living with people who are just like herself, seeing the world, and having fun. Unfortunately, the Faire has caused Fran to feel like even more of a freak than she did back home--not only is she six feet tall with dark hair and pale skin, but she's been cursed (blessed?) with the ability to read thoughts and feelings in other people just by touching them.

After buying a horse on a spur-of-the-moment trip away from the Faire grounds, her mother ropes her into a mission--Fran can keep the horse if she gets a job with the Faire to pay for his feed and vet bills, and if she helps the Faire owners, Absinthe and Peter, find out who's been stealing from the nightly take. She sets off to become an apprentice of Imogen, who reads palms and runes, as her job, and embarks on a Nancy Drew-ish mission to casually touch each individual who's had access to the safe.

During all of this she runs into (literally), Benedickt Czerny, who is Imogen's brother and who also happens to be a Moravian Dark One--a vampire. Added to that, Ben informs Fran that she's his Beloved, the one woman destined to redeem his soul. As she's reeling with all this implies, her investigation leads her to think that evil is in the camp, that someone has not only been stealing money but is planning on killing Ben.

As Fran and Ben begin a relationship, Fran begins to see that she's not a freak and an outsider, but someone who just might have more in common with the people of the Faire than she ever thought.

Katie Maxwell has written a funny and entertaining vampire story that's perfect for all ages. The mystery into the thefts and who wants to harm Ben is perfectly woven, and the last chapter definitely leaves it open for more stories starring the Dark One and his Beloved. An overall excellent read!

Almost as good as Twilight. (but not quite)

I liked this book, but it was so short I wished it had more explained. The ending never tells you the explanation of Ben that we really wanted.

Evil Plot with Vampire Romance Inbetween

The story was really good and all but it left me hanging there at the end. It didn't even let you know if they continued dating and stuff. Overall this book was really good!

double ha with what on it?

to be honest, i really did not enjoy this book. i read vampire books and nothing else, and this book was immature and boring. Fran needs to stop saying bullfrogs all the time. shes a teenager and is allowed to use more mature language. and the vampires, in my opinion were not believable as a creature of myth in the story.

    Got More?

This book had an excellent mystery plot with the idea of a vampire romance mixed in. Fran made me feel like a normal girl with all this talk of GothFaire. EXCELLENT read, I'm picking up the second book today. It was well written, but some of the diction could have been more mature. She is 16 after all. Very funny and sexy.

    Who says love bites?

I've been reading books by Katie Maxwell for a while, so I knew when I got this one that it would be funny, smart, and a little weird. And I was right! It's so mysterious, and gripping, and I really could relate to Francesca. And, honestly, who's never dreamed of a hot guy who, if you're not looking, will bite you...and you'll like it?
