Jillian Venters was a fairly spooky and morbid child. When she discovered the existence of the whole Gothic sub-culture, she clapped her hands with glee and fell upon it like a babybat upon a box of Count Chocula cereal. Since then, the Lady of the Manners has spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a polite Goth is much, much more subversive than just wearing T-shirts with "edgy" sayings on them. She lives in Seattle.
I've been reading Jillian Venters blog for quite some time now and was pleased to be affirmed in my opinion that dressing goth did not equal anti-social behavior. Having known more than a few goth teens over the years who didn't fit the fear based mold that society tries to stuff them into I am pleased to see Gothic Charm School hit the shelves and hopefully enlighten more people to this fact. My daughter's evolving sense of style leans toward the "cupcake goth" more often than not and I have been concerned about how she will be received in certain circles. She LOVES this book and I love it as well for how affirming it is both of her style choices and of the necessity for mannerly behavior in getting along in the world. Thank you to the Lady of the Manners for an engaging guide that is both educational and entertaining.

Definitely one of my favorites now. It will forever be on my bookshelf. The Lady of the Manners gave me some very helpful tips, and it is very informative. Funny too. I also learned new words from it! I love how she delves into the background of how Goth began, and how not every Goth out there is out to eat your heart. That's just twaddle.(<- one of the words) I am very glad that Jillian Venters wrote this books and made her site. If I ever go to Seattle I will definitely look her up.

If you are a friend, family member or curious about goths and their scene, I implore you to read this book. Goths, if you are tired og explaining to family and friends what its all about, make a gift of this book. If you yourself are goth and you don't exactly know how to face certain situations, The Lady of the Manners words will not only help but convey real understanding to whatever you might be going through!

The Lady of the Manners, Mrs. Jillian Venters gives you lists & fact vs. cliche. She even talks about love relationships, break ups, and weddings. I am only on chapter 6 or 7.

Goths are perfect an di shoul dthink that all people ( men woman children ) should be to enjoy their true inner self but u know we all a bad aide so why not join it or if u want to be a goodie goodie ( gg) thats not my problem deal with ur own problems :(;
