An essential, fully illustrated guidebook to day-to-day Goth living

There's more to being a Goth than throwing on some black velvet, dyeing your hair, and calling it a day (or a night). How do you dress with morbid flair when going to a job interview? Is there such a thing as growing too old to be a Goth? How do you explain to your grandma that it's not just a phase?

Jillian Venters, a.k.a. "the Lady of the Manners," knows how to be strange and unusual without sacrificing politeness and etiquette. In Gothic Charm School, she offers the quintessential guide to dark decorum for all those who have ever searched for beauty in dark, unexpected places, embraced their individuality, and reveled in decadence . . . and for families and friends who just don't understand.

Meet the Author

Jillian Venters was a fairly spooky and morbid child. When she discovered the existence of the whole Gothic sub-culture, she clapped her hands with glee and fell upon it like a babybat upon a box of Count Chocula cereal. Since then, the Lady of the Manners has spent a not inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a polite Goth is much, much more subversive than just wearing T-shirts with "edgy" sayings on them. She lives in Seattle.

I've been reading Jillian Venters blog for quite some time now and was pleased to be affirmed in my opinion that dressing goth did not equal anti-social behavior. Having known more than a few goth teens over the years who didn't fit the fear based mold that society tries to stuff them into I am pleased to see Gothic Charm School hit the shelves and hopefully enlighten more people to this fact. My daughter's evolving sense of style leans toward the "cupcake goth" more often than not and I have been concerned about how she will be received in certain circles. She LOVES this book and I love it as well for how affirming it is both of her style choices and of the necessity for mannerly behavior in getting along in the world. Thank you to the Lady of the Manners for an engaging guide that is both educational and entertaining.

Definitely one of my favorites now. It will forever be on my bookshelf. The Lady of the Manners gave me some very helpful tips, and it is very informative. Funny too. I also learned new words from it! I love how she delves into the background of how Goth began, and how not every Goth out there is out to eat your heart. That's just twaddle.(<- one of the words) I am very glad that Jillian Venters wrote this books and made her site. If I ever go to Seattle I will definitely look her up.

It's a great book full of general information. It's a quick go to, and Jillian's*cough* The Lady of the Manners is snarky and delightful.

This book is amazing. A true work of art. The stories are relatable, and the way that this is written is like your talking to the author herself. A wonderful explanation of goth, this also boosts self confidence and makes understanding goths a whole lot easier. I had a nongoth read this after years of what felt like torture and misunderstandings, and now, she can accept me for who i am and is much more comfortable with the gothic subculture. Thank you jillian! :)

If you are a friend, family member or curious about goths and their scene, I implore you to read this book. Goths, if you are tired og explaining to family and friends what its all about, make a gift of this book. If you yourself are goth and you don't exactly know how to face certain situations, The Lady of the Manners words will not only help but convey real understanding to whatever you might be going through!

The Lady of the Manners, Mrs. Jillian Venters gives you lists & fact vs. cliche. She even talks about love relationships, break ups, and weddings. I am only on chapter 6 or 7.
