Overview

If Mike Skinner got the lion's share of attention in 2002, with his own take on U.K. garage and hip-hop/techno derivations via his incarnation as the Streets, then fellow Brit Daniel Bedingfield deserves his own nod as well. That said, their approaches aren't really that parallel -- in place of Skinner's intentionally rough Midlands wide-boy approach, Bedingfield obviously loves recent R&B and chart pop vocals from America and elsewhere, and his closest compatriot might, in fact, be Craig David. Bedingfield's habit of sometimes biting down hard at the end of his lines is a bit unsettling, something which the hints of electronic tweaking bring out further. It's not all that surprising in the era of ProTooled on-focus vocal arrangements, though, and he's got a good air of nervous bravura that readily turns up on tracks like "James Dean (I Wanna Know)" and the fantastic "Friday." The air of desperation in Bedingfield's lyrics and delivery -- often informed by his strongly felt religious beliefs but wisely never pretending to ignore pressures of the flesh and the heart -- suits the sharp, crisp charge of the music to a T in the pop
ock-informed clip of "I Can't Read You" and the wonderfully ominous sass and swing of the Henry Mancini-sampling "Inflate My Ego" (with two instances where the blend is spot on). Meanwhile, there's no question Bedingfield's a great self-producer, handling or co-handling every song but one with poise. The title track is a marvel of bedroom recording translating into brilliant pop -- there are multimillion dollar studio efforts that don't sound so on-point and alive, down to the clipped string sample at the song's end. When it comes to the slower ballads, they work best in sudden moments -- the soaring end to "If You're Not the One" -- or by not denying the energy that charges his work up so well, thus the sweet, mid-paced groove of "He Don't Love You Like I Love You" and the even better "Girlfriend."

Daniel Bedingfield is like the great, white hope of R&B/pop music! It's an album for anyone with an eclectic taste as it moves from sounding like Craig David to BBMak to classic Stevie Wonder. Though the hit title track is one of the many highlights of this album, don't think 'Gotta Get Thru This' is all Daniel Bedingfield has to offer. Bedingfield shows off his incredible songwriting in songs like 'Without The Girl', 'If You're Not The One' and the soulful 'Honest Questions'. And in the same beat, he moves us, skillfully, to a few of the best, freshest beats that we have heard since Missy Elliot. With songs like 'Blown It Again', 'Inflate My Ego', and 'Friday', it's crazy to think that Bedingfield would stay in the UK with this amazing talent. 'Gotta Get Thru This' is one of those album that leaves you wanting more everytime you listen to it. Please Mr. Bedingfield, may we have some more?

This is absolutely, no doubt the best CD of 2002. I think I listen to it at least twice a day, and I'm not tired of it yet. "Gotta Get Thru This" is a great song, but there's SO much more on the CD. You will NOT be disappointed!

this cd is good if you like jamiroquai, for its in that fashion of music. Its tight and all but when you copy something already done i would hope so. all in all its worth a listen, or if you are waiting for a new jamiroquai cd this will hold you over some.

Someone once said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. If this is true, Daniel Bedingfield uses his music as the voice of his soul. His heartfelt lyrics, originating from his own personal experiences, portray feelings that almost anyone who has ever been in love can relate to. Embracing the diversity amongst musical styles, Bedingfield has generated a style all his own in his fist album, Gotta Get Through This, which combines ballads and hip hop dance into one neat little package. It¿s a CD that can truly be enjoyed by the listener in any mood, at any given time.

I first heard Daniel's song 'Gotta get thru this' on the radio a few months ago. I fell in love with the song, and after listening to clips of the other tracks on his album on his website, I immediately went and bought the cd. He has awesome writing capabilities, as it is blatantly obvious in his songs. He has great beats and rhythms and seems to get just the right music with his lyrics. I also love the fact that he does not swear on this record at all. It just goes to show that you can be a success without having to have every other word bleeped out on your record.

Daniel Bedingfield offers many styles of music in his cd. "James Dean" is edgy garage sound, while "Girlfriend" is catchy, upbeat pop. "Honest Questions" displays Daniel's voice along with thoughtful lyrics. I haven't bought a cd that I listen to this much in a long time.
