Overview

In this essay, Nil Santiáñez compares the iconography of war as depicted in Francisco de Goya’s engravings with German-Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz’s theories, arguing that in the work of both the artist and the writer one can find the seeds of a new concept of war which is still relevant and which is particularly useful for understanding contemporary conflicts. Multidisciplinary in its scope, with numerous illustrations of the works of Goya and other painters and photographers, this book serves both as an accessible introduction to the philosophy of Clausewitz and a reinterpretation of the significance of Goya’s series The Disasters of War.
