I've read about 200 pages so far and it is very readable by which I mean the style of writing is easy but not simple. Hughes goes off on relevant tangents e.g. the Iquisition to gat a feel for the social surroundings in which Goya worked. They are not too long and Hughes uses some strong language which I like. After all I want to know what the author feels/thinks about Goya, etc. There are lots of color illustrations or pictures with descriptions by Hughes and others that he quotes. I am surprised that more readers have not read this fine piece of art-social-political-biography-history writing. I recently saw the Goya painting by Goya of the Duchess of Alba, its right as you walk into the Hispanic Society in NYC. I had a wonderful tour.
