From The CriticsReviewer: Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD (Bridgeport Hospital)
Description: Throughout the six editions of this informative book, the editor and writers have succeeded in their goals to produce a readable and sophisticated update of plastic surgery.
Purpose: The formative editions were leaner in size than the current edition, but in keeping with their charge, the authors have condensed an entire field of knowledge into a single book. No longer a bedtime read, this edition has stayed true to the task of reinventing itself by updating, rewriting, or appending new information in the realm of plastic surgery by experts in the field.
Audience: "The authors are luminaries in their field. Who is the beneficiary of such a book? Just about anyone who wishes to increase their knowledge base in plastic surgery. Because plastic surgery is not contained by the boundaries of any one specialty, those needing this information are not limited to any one specialty. Hence, those in plastic, orthopedic, and hand surgery and in specialties dealing with conditions of the head, neck, eye, mouth, oral cavity, as well as burns, healing, and congenital areas will benefit.
Features: "A plethora of black-and-white photos, drawings, charts, and diagrams appear throughout the 900-plus pages. An accompanying black-and-white DVD presents salient truncated features of each chapter for supplemental memory recall. Of the 93 chapters, the preface notes that 64 are completely new to this edition while the remaining 29 chapters have been revised. The book is divided into eight parts. Commencing with basic principles and science, the first part deals with various surgical techniques, wound healing, microsurgery, tissue expansion, blood supply of the skin, and local anesthetics to name a few. Parts 2 through 8 cover the topics of skin and soft tissues, congenital anomalies and pediatric plastic surgery, head and neck topics, aesthetic surgery, breast, trunk and lower extremity, and hand. Each chapter is well referenced, written in a comprehensible format and laden with rich content. "
Assessment: This sixth edition ably carries the mantle of prior editions, thus affording another generation of physicians the opportunity to weigh in on these compelling topics.
