Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Michael Byun, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: The editors have gathered an impressive group of contributors for the fifth edition of this book. This edition includes more than 140 expert surgeons from all disciplines of plastic surgery. The previous edition was published in 1991.
Purpose: The purpose of the fifth edition is to provide a concise and practical single-volume text book covering the entire spectrum of plastic surgery. The editors achieved the goal of organizing the information into a compact form that is easily accessed and well referenced.
Audience: The editors indicate that this book is intended for those interested in plastic surgery at all levels of training. This book will serve well as a quick reference for the resident and practicing surgeon and it will be a great source of review for those preparing for the American Board of Plastic Surgery written exams.
Features: The writing style of the text is clear and objective without being dogmatic. The black-and-white photography and illustrations do not overshadow the text material but rather complements it effectively. A unique feature is the inclusion of the CD-ROM version of the book with each copy.
Assessment: Increased coverage of the field of plastic surgery reflects changes in the specialty. This fifth edition is superior to the previous edition. The number of chapters increased from 52 to 92, corresponding to the tremendous expansion of the field in the last decade. This is an amazing compendium through which the reader may examine the entire field of plastic surgery and get "a lot of bang for the buck." This textbook should be an accessible source of information for the training and the practicing plastic surgeon.
