Overview

Now in its thoroughly updated Second Edition, this classic three-volume work is the most comprehensive reference ever published on surgical flaps for reconstructing defects in all parts of the body. In 501 clearly organized chapters, internationally recognized surgeons describe and illustrate every clinically proven flap option available for repairing every routine and unusual defect. Complementing the text are more than 4,200 clinical photographs and diagrams of anatomy, blood supply, flap design, and operative procedures. The Second Edition includes new chapters by experts who have made landmark contributions to the recent literature. Many chapters from the previous edition have been completely revised, and chapters describing flaps that have not proven clinically reliable have been deleted. Wherever appropriate, the editors have added editorial comments to guide the reader in selection of flaps. The volumes are extensively indexed and organized by anatomic region, and chapters follow a uniform format that clearly presents all the information needed on each flap — indications, anatomy, blood supply, surgical techniques, complications, safeguards to keep in mind, and advantages and disadvantages of the flap. From this remarkably complete collection of clinical information, surgeons can select with confidence the best flap for safe, predictable, and aesthetically acceptable results.

The 424 chapters are arranged in five major sections: head and neck reconstruction; upper extremity reconstruction; axillary, chest, and back reconstruction; abdominal wall and pelvic region reconstruction; and lower extremity reconstruction. Reviewer: Geoffrey Fenner, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: The origins of plastic surgery stem from the early management of traumatic embattled wounds. Reconstructive plastic surgery has evolved secondary to advances in vascular anatomy, microsurgery, and by necessity in restoration of complex oncologic defects. This second edition represents the cumulative experience of the leaders in our field and their contributions to a field immersed in challenging, compromised wounds, tissue deficits, and functional loss. The work represents a collection of the most reliable, time-tested flaps and their specific indications
Purpose: This highly organized, multiauthored, three volume encyclopedia represents the most complete reference for autologous regional reconstruction. Five hundred various flaps were chosen from over 10,000 cited references. One hundred and twenty new or revised chapters, indicative of the latest advances, have been added to this second edition. Many of the contributors include the originators of the flap, and although kept to a uniform format, they offer an individualized narrative of the procedure and indications. Numerous chapters are preceded with an editorial comment offering clinical insight or technical pearls.
Audience: This book is ideal for those just beginning study in this area, as well as seasoned microsurgeons.
Features: Each chapter is organized into an introduction, a section on anatomy, flap design, and operative technique. Most sections include a diagramatic and clinical pictorial. Flap fundamentals such as the rhomberg, kite, or VY flap, may be described as a principle, or as an established regional option. Adjunct principles such as prefabrication, tissue expansion, and intestinal transfer are reviewed by a list of preeminent pioneers including Baudet, Jurkiewitz, and Littler. Each chapter has an inclusive list of historical as well as current references, lending value as an essential reference tool. The first volume encompasses the head and neck has 18 subsections and 207 described flaps. The second volume involves the upper extremity and covers 9 subsections with 115 flaps, 11 of which are dedicated to the thumb tip. The third volume encompasses the trunk, pelvis, and lower extremities, and has 12 sections and 179 chapters. Specialized flaps such as functional muscle transfers, compostite osteo-myo-cutaneous flaps, hair bearing flaps, and flaps for salvage are included with clinical examples.
Assessment: This encyclopedia represents the most definitive and focused cumulated reference for autologous flap reconstruction. The contents prove indispensable to the experienced as well as the novice reconstructive surgeon. Readers can investigate every anatomic region, and they are afforded a variety of options as well as supplemental references. This work depicts the breadth, diversity, and quality of the field.
