More About This Textbook

Overview

Now in its thoroughly updated Third Edition, this classic work is the most comprehensive reference ever published on surgical flaps for reconstructing defects in all parts of the body. In 535 clearly organized chapters, internationally recognized surgeons describe and illustrate every clinically proven flap option available for repairing every routine and unusual defect. Complementing the text are hundreds of clinical photographs and diagrams of anatomy, blood supply, flap design, and operative procedures.

The Third Edition features 45 new chapters by experts who have made landmark contributions to the recent literature. Many chapters from the previous edition have been completely revised. Wherever appropriate, the editors have added editorial comments to guide the reader in selection of flaps.

The volumes are extensively indexed and organized by anatomic region, and chapters follow a uniform format that clearly presents all the information needed on each flap—indications, anatomy, blood supply, surgical techniques, complications, safeguards to keep in mind, and advantages and disadvantages of the flap. From this remarkably complete collection of clinical information, surgeons can select with confidence the best flap for safe, predictable, and aesthetically acceptable results.

Purchasers of the three-volume set will have access to a companion Website featuring the fully searchable text.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD (Bridgeport Hospital)
Description: This three-volume set is exactly as billed — an encyclopedic treatment of flap reconstruction of the face, body, and hand that can be called upon for the planning of a surgery and used as a valuable reference to assist surgeons through the vast maze of procedures.
Purpose: This third edition continues to fulfill the objective of the first, which was to create an encyclopedic reference guide to the multitude of flaps that are used for reconstruction throughout the body. The authors provide a treasure trove of relevant procedures.
Audience: What better way to choose the authors for descriptions of each flap than to recruit the authors of the original or subsequently revised articles? The beneficiaries of this brain trust include seasoned surgeons who have a need to either refresh their memories or seek out alternatives to vexing situations as well as residents in plastic surgery.
Features: Contemporary thought on nasal and hand reconstruction, microvascular, innervated flaps, and facial transplantation marks this third edition. This update, like its predecessors, uses a standardized format to describe each flap, which includes the indications, anatomy, surgical technique for lifting and applying the flap, along with the potential complications. An editorial comment specifying the utility of each flap, in the real world of surgery, adds an insight that may assist surgeons in choosing a particular flap. Because of the ever expanding realm of flap reconstruction, especially free tissue transfer, this edition has been revised and expanded with 45 new chapters. A companion web site has the fully searchable text online. The illustrations and photography include black-and-white renditions consistent with many of the original landmark articles published in journals. An extensive reference section at the end of each chapter allows readers to further investigate flap details. As an encyclopedia, this book gives an overview of flaps, but it will not always satisfy a reader's need to obtain additional understanding of design and execution; it is not an all-in-one text on the subject.
Assessment: Libraries, institutions, and surgeons that require a centralized body of flap information will benefit from this latest edition.
