School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-A quiet story of two friends: Grace, a lonely preschooler, and the neighborhood mail carrier, Joe. She follows him on his rounds all summer, throughout the next year and the following summer. And then, it's time for her to begin kindergarten, where she makes a new friend. At home, she writes a story about a mail carrier, a little girl, and a new friend, and gives it to Joe, who hangs it on his wall. The story itself is mildly interesting and, although predictable, ends nicely. Unfortunately, some of the sentences are too complicated for beginning readers, and seem to be constructed simply to get as many descriptive phrases into the book as possible. One of them reads, ``One summer day, as Grace sat on her front porch, the mail carrier, who had a belly the same size as his mailbag, shoved a stack of catalogs and bills into the mailbox.'' The illustrations are expressive and enhance the action in the text. Overall, this book depicts a healthy intergenerational friendship in a suburban neighborhood, and is sure to bring gentle smiles to the faces of young readers.-Sharron McElmeel, Cedar Rapids Community Schools, IA
