Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Donna Ashcraft
Kirsty Tate and Rachel Walker are best friends in elementary school who have a special gift of befriending fairies and helping them fight the goblins who are always trying to steal their party favors. Although the book introduces a special party coming up for the Fairyland king and queen, the story never gets to that party, but is centered on the birthday party for Kirsty's five-year-old neighbor, Jamie Cooper. They offer to help set the party up, but all their efforts are thwarted by a goblin. However, the party is eventually saved and turns out extra fantastic due to the intervention of Grace the Glitter Fairy. Throughout the story only Kirsty and Rachel are aware of the goblin and the fairy, while the Coopers and their guests are oblivious to the mishaps and magic that occurs around them. The reading level is appropriate for girls in lower elementary, but the mix of reality and fantasy does not come across as believable. Instead, these girls leave the impression that they are helpless without the aid of a fairy. Reviewer: Donna Ashcraft
