Excitement, danger, and falling for the man of her dreams all have Grace under pressure.

Small town college professor Grace Michaels' normally boring life has become more than a sane woman can handle. First, her ex-finance shows up in town, then her parents park their RV in front of her house. It makes it kind of difficult to seduce her sexy new neighbor, Sheriff Ren Morello. Of course, having her office and home burglarized isn't great either, but it does put her up close and personal with Ren.

Ren wants nothing to do with Grace. So what if he can't seem to stop thinking about her? She is a woman who would demand commitment and after his nasty divorce from his cheating ex-wife, Ren wants nothing to do with marriage. All he wants is hard fast sex. The problem is, the only woman he can picture it with is Grace.

When the threats to Grace turn almost deadly, Ren finds himself in her company more often than not, and keeping his hands off her becomes impossible. But as the danger grows closer, the attraction grows deeper, and Grace must choose between protecting her heart or her life.

Chapter One

Grace sat in the passenger seat of Ren's truck with her head back and her eyes closed. Every time he glanced at her, the streetlights cast a pallor to her skin he knew wasn't as bad in reality, but it still irritated him. Hell, anger boiled so hot in his blood he worried what he would do when he found out who had pushed her down those stairs. He pulled into his driveway. "Grace," he said in a husky whisper. "Honey, we need to get you in the house."

She smiled then opened her eyes. She looked around in confusion. "What are we doing here?"

"I think you need stay with me tonight. As soon as I get you into the house, I'll go get your mutt."

The smile returned, but a with a seductive edge. "So, you were lying to Gabriel?" It took him a second or two, then he remembered his comment about jumping her bones.

"No. It's probably safer at my house." Okay, a stupid argument, but even he could not explain the surge of protectiveness threatening to black out any of the good intentions he had. She wrinkled her nose at the stupid suggestion. Okay, so even she knew it didn't ring true. Maybe she would take pity on him, and let it pass.

"You mean your house, across the street from mine, is safer?"

No luck. He had no luck when it came to fooling women.

"Your house was broken into yesterday. You have to admit that."

That cute little crease formed between her eyebrows like every time she was thinking. Before he knew what he was doing, he leaned over and kissed the little wrinkle. Surprised, she looked up. Then, her lips curved into a smile full of warmth and sex that shot right down to his gut. Electricity crackled between them. Her lips parted as if waiting for a kiss. Craving but not taking her had been driving him insane. He wanted her with a need that bordered on sexual obsession. He was in serious trouble, but there was nothing he could do.

His hand slid to the nape of her neck, and tangled in those amber curls as he drew the two of them close. The minute his lips touched hers, he knew he'd lost the battle. Her lips were cool and dry, but this time he hadn't surprised her. She had seen the kiss coming, and returned it with enthusiasm. His tongue tickled the line of her sealed lips, and she opened them without hesitation, moaning in appreciation.

His other hand found her breast, and as he plundered her mouth, he massaged and kneaded. The fabric of her jacket hindered his exploration. Without breaking the kiss, his hand slid down the front, unbuttoning it. Once undone, his hand stole inside her jacket and he realized she wore nothing beneath but a bra, one of those lacy half-cup ones that pushed up her breasts. His finger traced the edge, while lightly skimming her flesh that pressed against it. He ignored the fact that his hand shook when he touched her. He teased her by sliding his finger into the cup and gliding it over her nipple. His balls tightened as he moved his finger to the strap, and pulled it down off her shoulder. One extra little tug, and her breast sprang free.

She broke off the kiss, allowing her head to tip back, her eyes still closed. His lips traveled down her exposed throat, flicking his tongue against her hot flesh while his finger began to trace a circle around her nipple. She moaned, an earthy, sensual sound that slid into his stomach and down his spine. Completely genuine, that one little moan was one of the most erotic sounds he'd ever heard.

He continued the descent down her neck to her chest and was within centimeters of devouring her nipple. There wasn't much light inside his truck, but he could make out the puckered bud in the weak glow from one of the nearby streetlights. Blood rushed to his cock. He groaned, and took the nipple into his mouth. He suckled and licked, and her moans increased.

A different beam of light shone through the back window of the truck. Grace let out a groan that skittered through his system. He decided to ignore it.

"Grace," a soft female voice said. "Are you in there?"

Somewhere in his hormone-soaked mind, he recognized that voice. He lifted his head and looked at Grace. Her jacket was undone, her bra half off, and her beautiful rosy-brown nipple glistened from his kiss.

Reason warred with hormones. Reason finished a distant second. He bent his head to take the nipple in his mouth again, when he heard the voice again, only much closer this time.

Then it clicked. That soft, southern voice belonged to the woman he'd rented his house from: Adrienne Michaels, with whom he'd spoken on the phone frequently enough to recognize by voice. He abruptly lifted his head.

"Grace, honey, your mother is standing at the rear of the truck with a flashlight," he said as he pulled the bra strap back up on Grace's shoulder, and had to work the cup back up over that beautiful puckered nipple. He couldn't help himself, and brushed the back of his knuckles over it, happy to see a rush of goose bumps across her chest. Hastily he buttoned her jacket, and looked at her.

"My mother?" she asked, her voice was still husky with passion. The implication of what he said registered and her eyes widened. "My mother?" Her voice raised in worry. Her smile disappeared. "What the hell is my mother doing here?" The last question came out in a whisper, and she crouched down in her seat, trying to hide.

"I have no idea."

As he reached for the door handle, her mother said, "Grace Beatrice Michaels, get out of there right now!"

Meet the Author

Born to an Air Force family at an Army hospital, USA TODAY Bestselling author Melissa Schroeder has always been a little bit screwy. She was further warped by her years of watching Monty Python and her strange family. Her love of romance novels developed after accidentally picking up a Linda Howard book. From then on, she was hooked. She read close to 300 novels in one year and decided romance was her true calling instead of the literary short stories and suspense stories she had been writing. After many attempts, she realized that romantic comedy, or at least romance with a comedic edge, was where she was destined to be.

Influences in her writing come from Nora Roberts, Jenny Crusie, Susan Andersen, Amanda Quick, Jayne Anne Krentz, Julia Quinn, Christina Dodd, and Lori Foster. Since her first release in 2004, Melissa has written close to thirty short stories, novellas and novels released with seven different publishers in a variety of genres and time periods. Those releases included a 2005 Eppie Finalist, Two Capa finalists, and an International ebook best seller in June of 2005. Surrender was named top Category Romance by Authors After Dark, and she was named Author of the Year and Most Accessible Author.

Since she was a military brat, she vowed never to marry military. Alas, fate always has her way with mortals. Her husband is an Air Force major, and together they have their own military brats, two girls, and an adopted dog-daughter. They live wherever the military sticks them, which, she is sure, will always involve heat and bugs only seen on the Animal Discovery Channel. In her spare time, she reads, complains about bugs, travels, cooks, reads some more, watches her DVD collections of Arrested Development and Seinfeld, and tries to convince her family that she truly is a delicate genius. She has yet to achieve her last goal.

She has always believed that romance and humor go hand in hand. Love can conquer all and as Mark Twain said, "Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand." Combining the two, she hopes she gives her readers a thrilling love story, filled with chuckles along the way, and a happily ever after.

I'v read many of Ms. Schroeder's books before and have enjoyed them all, with the exception of this one. The story and character's were well developed, but it dragged on quite a bit, and the editing is horrendous. I wish there was a way to get my money back. When you have to supply the words youself and are drawn out of the story to read a sentence twice because it's missing a word - that's not worth paying for. I believe Ms. Schroeder is very talented, but she needs another editor! If I were her, I would be ashamed to sell this book as it is now.

I thought the story was cute - character development was good- plot was good but what I found odd was that it seemed like the book wasn't edited. I'm not an English major by any means but there were instances where the sentences were run-ons and sentences where you realized that part of the verb was missing or just certain words in a sentence were missing because the sentence didn't make sense. A sentence that used the word "two" when it should have been "too". It seemed like the first half of the story was a little cleaner and the second half not so much even with some of the dialogue. There were enough instances that I got back online to see if others had mentioned it. I see I'm the first to say anything about it. I'm still glad I read it though. It just could have been better with a little work.

This is a re-release of Melissa Schroeder’s first book.  This is a sweet, funny, sexy contemporary romance.  Grace is a slightly clumsy college professor with a heart of gold living and working in a small Texas town. Ren Morello is the hunky new sheriff who moves in across the street.  He is recently divorced and wants to keep any and all interactions with the female set no strings.  Grace was cheated on by her ex fiancé but is still the settling down kind and thus not for Ren no matter how sexy he finds her.  I adored Grace and got almost as big a kick out of the secondary characters as I did Ren & Grace.  Another winner from the pen of Melissa Schroeder.

I love a good story, full of passion, sex and a good plot. This had a rather good plot, but I just could NOT get past the spelling and grammar errors. I had to STOP and make sure I read the sentence right. Please, I realize this was just a small book, but please, PLEASE check your spelling!!!
