A Top Pick from The Romance Reviews
Note to Self: GRACEFUL SUBMISSION packs a powerful punch in a small package. Somehow the author found a way to demonstrate that cyber submission isn't disconnected at all, but engaging, erotic and fulfilling. Who knew?
To Do List:
1. Tell everyone that the format of the book and energy captured in the writing made GRACEFUL SUBMISSION a joy to read.
2. Make sure everyone knows that each chapter starts with Grace's "Note To Self" and "To Do List" (just like this review) which gives us a peek into her mind and sense of humor.
3. Share how the anonymity of cyber submission is a clever way of bringing two people from very different lives together.
Grace is a high school senior English teacher and an aspiring author. With her best friend's birthday fast approaching, she sets out to plan a surprise birthday party all the way from Denver.
Lindsey, her best friend since childhood, lives in LA. Coming to Grace's rescue to provide some LA based assistance in planning and prepping for the party is Toffer, Lindsey's husband's best friend.
The two exchange IM's and Dominant Toffer picks up on hints of Grace's submissive side and delves further. It soon evolves into a cyber D/s relationship with plans for in person play when Grace gets to LA for Lindsey's party.
Little does Grace know that Toffer is actually David Drake, the hugely famous movie star.
This story is so perfect for the times. I know cyber relationships take place frequently, but honestly, I couldn't wrap my brain around how exactly two people who don't actually see or speak to each other, who only communicate through the written word, can actually.um. you know, have sex. Look. I've been married since before Amazon existed and there was such a thing as online shopping people. Just a little slack, ok?
Well, now I am enlightened.
It actually seemed pretty natural and made lots of sense. I would never have imagined two people could build such a connection in this way. But the anonymity made it easier to be honest and admit what would be REALLY embarrassing otherwise. It also made it easier for Grace to take risks without worrying about humiliating herself in front of another. Fascinating.
Both characters were really fun to get to know. They were quirky and cute, and even a bit lonely which made them that much more endearing. I had as much fun following the story and seeing how the plot played out as I did exploring this new cyber relationship phenomenon.
Although it started online, it did move to phone play and eventually the two began to play in person.
Keeping things interesting and real were stumbling blocks large and small that two people just have to deal with. Both had admirers who wanted more and were willing to get ugly when rejected. Both had jobs that required attention. And both had insecurities to keep in check.
All I can say is that I wanted more. And oh so happy am I to discover there is a follow up story! So I will just be happily rereading this delicious little treat and looking for more by Melinda Barron. Feel free to join me, it really is yummo. Enjoy!
