Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Gary B Kaniuk, Psy.D.(Cermak Health Services)
Description: This is the 38th edition of a book that describes information for more than 500 graduate departments, programs, and schools of psychology, located in the United States and Canada.
Purpose: According to the executive director of the American Psychological Association, Paul Nelson, PhD, "the purpose of this publication is to provide an information service, offering in one book information about the majority of graduate programs in psychology."
Audience: It is intended to assist individuals interested in graduate study in psychology.
Features: The book lists each program alphabetically by state. Listings include department information, programs and degrees offered, APA accreditation, student applications/admissions, student characteristics, financial information/assistance, employment of department graduates, additional information, application information. The book includes everything a prospective student needs to know in order to begin their search for graduate study in psychology. Most of the programs have e-mail addresses and web sites listed so that more information can be obtained. The information was obtained from questionnaires sent to each program and the publisher disclaims responsibility for its accuracy. The American Psychological Association has required certain provisions in order for a program to be included in this book, which helps in the quality assurance aspect.
Assessment: This will be a tremendous aid for anyone interested in graduate study in psychology. You can compare programs easily and there is a wealth of information available. Surprisingly enough, the programs even list the numbers of students who withdrew or were dismissed. Two indexes list programs by area of study and alphabetically. The book also contains a nice introduction called "Considering Graduate Study." There really is no other reference comparable to this one. All in all, I highly recommend this book for all prospective graduate psychology students. The new edition is justified because the information is updated, which is crucial for students to make good decisions.
